Position: Residential Community Support Workers Casual Pool)
Program Overview
Taproot Community Support Services operates across Alberta, British Columbia, and Ontario, providing community‑based services to children, youth, families, and people with diverse abilities. The company is a certified B Corporation and employee‑owned through an Employee Ownership Trust.

Youth Horizons
Youth Horizons is a licensed 4‑bed co‑ed resource focusing on female youth aged 13‑18, receiving services through MCFD. It provides a safe home environment in Saanich. Staff use a person‑centered, trauma‑informed approach, recognising the effects of trauma, helping youth cope, avoiding re‑traumatisation, and facilitating personal growth through assessment, relationship‑building, and cultural awareness.

Skyline
Skyline is a licensed 2‑bed co‑ed resource for youth ages 13‑18, receiving services through MCFD. It offers a safe home environment in Downtown Victoria and requires staff to apply trauma‑informed methods, assess, build relationships, respond to disclosures, focus on strengths, and be culturally aware.

Experience with the interaction of trauma and substance use with youth is an asset.

The Position
We are currently hiring for the following roles in a casual/on‑call capacity, with opportunities to apply for part‑time and full‑time positions when available:

Asleep Residential Night Workers (Grid
5)

Residence Worker (Grid 10)

Residential Child and Youth Workers (may include overnight awake scheduling) (Grid 11)

All positions require union membership with BCGEU. Casual/on‑call staff will cover a variety of unionized roles and shifts (based on availability) in a 24‑hr/7 program in Victoria. The role involves working late and may require overnight scheduling.

In Your Role You Will

Independently work with client(s) towards achieving the goals set out in their Individual Support Plan (ISP), encouraging them during setbacks and celebrating successes.

Support/supervise complex behavioural, emotional and social needs/development in the residence and during community activities.

Use de‑escalation techniques to manage challenging behaviours.

Assist clients in developing life skills within the home, including household chores (meal prep, cleaning, etc.) in a consistent, healthy & safe environment, and their community.

Model healthy relationships and set boundaries.

Transport and assist residents to appointments, shopping, or leisure activities; operate motor vehicles safely and legally while transporting clients or on Taproot business.

Prior to confirmation of employment, all applicants must provide a copy of a current Criminal Record Check and/or Government Screening Letter.

As an Ideal Candidate You Posess

Diploma or Degree in Child and Youth Care, Psychology, Social Work, Disability Studies, Sociology, Healthcare Aide, PSW, Practical Nursing or equivalent.

Minimum of 1 year experience in adult, child and youth care, or with individuals with a developmental disability, mental health issues or brain injury in a community‑based setting.

Other combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Relevant field experience:
Community Support Worker, Education Assistant, Special Needs, Behaviour Interventionist, Youth Worker.

Valid BC Driver’s Class 5 License and clean driver’s abstract.

A reliable, safe vehicle with appropriate insurance is an asset.

Experience with Positive Behaviour Supports and Trauma‑informed care is an asset.

Valid CPR/First Aid, Non‑Violent Crisis Intervention Certificate (Mandt) and Conflict Resolution Certificate (or ability to obtain within probation period).

Successful applicants will be required to participate in MCFD screening and provide three professional references prior to confirmed employment.
