Job Summary

All Police Department applicants are required to fill out their complete work history on the application. Selected applicants will also be requested to successfully complete the following:
  • Personal Information and History Packet
  • Written Examination
  • Physical Ability Course
  • Oral Review Board
  • Submit all additional required documentation as described on the Document Checklist for Police Positions on page 4 of the Personal Information and History Packet.
Important… Care should be given to make sure that you meet the minimum standards set forth in the Personal Information and History Packet. Those that do not meet the minimum standards will not be allowed to complete the process and be considered for employment. Information will be provided to applicants concerning the dates, times and locations for any exams after all applications have been received.

Applicants will be disqualified for:
  • Failure to meet established deadlines
  • Not meeting the minimum standards as set out by the City of Victoria
  • Refusal or failure to provide requested documents
  • Willful deceit and/or furnishing false or misleading information in the application, Personal Information and History Packet, or other application process

Police 2025 Fall Academy Hiring Phase Schedule

Please review the important dates below to plan ahead for this testing phase.

March 25th -Posting Closes at Noon

April 1st - Applicant Testing in Victoria, by Invitation Via Email Only (Written and Physical Ability)

April 2nd - 3rd - Review Board Interviews

April 9th - May 16th - Background Investigations, followed by Administration Reviews

May 19th - 23rd - Chief's Interviews/Contingent Offer to Successful Candidate(s)

June 9th -Tentative Hire Date of successful candidate(s) with the City of Victoria

July 7th - Police Academy Begins

December 10th -Police Academy Graduation

The Police Officer Trainee (Non-Certified) is responsible for receiving Victoria Police Department pre-academy training and Police Academy training and completing qualifications to obtain a peace officer certification through the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE).

Principal Duties And Responsibilities

  • Attends pre-academy training activities and receives and demonstrates understanding of classroom and field instruction in report writing, geographical comprehension, and department policies.
  • Maintains or exceeds passing score (80%) in all areas reviewed during the pre-academy training.
  • Attends Police Academy and other police training activities to receive classroom and field instruction in basic police methods, laws, policies, and ordinances.
  • Attends Academy regularly and arrives on time.
  • Maintains passing score (80%) in all subjects of instruction while attending the Police Academy.
  • Meets or exceeds minimum physical fitness curriculum before and while attending the Police Academy.
  • Reports deficiency or difficulties in meeting minimum set standards of the Police Academy to the Training Unit in a timely manner.
  • When the Police Academy is not in session reports to work at the VPD Training Unit for assignment.
  • Performs duties according to the City and departmental safety rules and policies.
  • Performs all other job related duties as assigned or as become apparent.
  • Ability to get along with other employees and the public.
PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

Police Officer Trainee (Non-Certified) will be exposed to physical stress and exertion in the Police Academy. Police Officer Trainee (Non-Certified) will be exposed to possibly dangerous criminals on an ongoing basis after completion of the Academy. Cadet must work in seasonal temperatures and may be exposed to potentially hazardous chemicals and diseases. Sufficient physical ability and stamina to bend, run, lift and crawl into small spaces and to restrain suspects.

May ride patrol in either a patrol vehicle, bicycle, or on a motorcycle. Must be able to safely operate a motor vehicle at high speeds during emergencies. Ability to lift 35-40 pounds frequently, up to 70 pounds occasionally, and to pull or drag up to 150 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, co-peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.



Required Qualifications

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:

Ability to read and interpret assignments, policies, ordinances, state laws, reports, and updates regarding criminal activity. Ability to communicate knowledge and ideas in a clear and concise manner both verbally and in written form. Ability to obtain skill in the use of firearms and other related law enforcement equipment. Knowledge of computers and typing skills.



Minimum Education , Experience And Certification
