Role SummaryDo you have a passion for translating complex science into compelling stories? As the Social Media Writer/Communications Manager at the National Science Foundation (NSF), you will be the primary voice shaping the agency’s digital presence. You will strategically craft and manage all content that communicates the profound impact of NSF‑funded research and science discovery. This role is crucial for supporting leadership messaging and ensuring that our communications effectively engage a broad, diverse audience, including scientists, educators, students, and the general public.
Key Responsibilities- Write and post content, owning the strategic execution of NSF’s digital content across platforms like X/Twitter, Linked In, and Instagram while maintaining brand consistency and adhering to the official tone and strategic priorities.
- Coordinate social media coverage by gathering photos, videos, and graphics, identifying relevant hashtags and partner accounts, and collaborating with other agencies to ensure coordinated, impactful coverage of joint events.
- Manage real‑time social media: track online conversations, identify potential reputational risks or engagement opportunities, and provide timely guidance to NSF leadership and communications staff.
- Create reports and summaries: after events, synthesize key outcomes and performance highlights into concise summaries and work with analytics teams to assess reach, engagement, and audience response.
- Ensure all content follows plain‑language guidelines and clearance protocols, ensuring clarity, accessibility, and compliance with federal standards and NSF’s internal review processes.
- Draft, schedule, and publish platform‑appropriate copy for Director and NSF accounts, including live event coverage.
- Collect multimedia, curate hashtags/handles, and coordinate with host agencies’ social teams for event coverage.
- Monitor social trends during events and advise leadership on emergent issues.
- Produce brief post‑event summaries and coordinate with metrics analysts to produce engagement reports.
- Ensure all content follows Plain Language and clearance protocols.
- Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Digital Media, or equivalent experience.
- 3–5 years of social media management, content creation, and analytics experience.
- Strong writing/editing skills, familiarity with major platform best practices, and experience coordinating live coverage.
- Experience managing executive‑level social accounts and working with agency leadership.
- Familiarity with social listening and scheduling tools.
- Content calendars outlining scheduled posts across platforms aligned with NSF campaigns, events, and strategic priorities.
- Live‑event posts highlighting key moments, quotes, visuals, and audience engagement.
- Post‑event summaries covering event highlights, key messages, and social media performance.
- Monthly engagement reports tracking metrics such as reach, engagement, follower growth, and content effectiveness.
Primarily at headquarters in Alexandria, VA; availability required for nights/weekends.
Performance Measures- Engagement metrics: consistently producing content that drives strong audience interaction.
- Timeliness for live coverage: delivering accurate, well‑crafted posts in real time during events.
- Error‑free publishing rate: zero factual, grammatical, or formatting errors.
- Leadership satisfaction: NSF leadership consistently approves and endorses social media content.
