Job Overview

This is a public notice for Drug Enforcement Administration Criminal Investigator GL‑1811-7/9/11 positions open to U.S. Citizens. Duties
  • Conduct complex criminal investigations targeting narcotics and drug‑related activities.
  • Prepare comprehensive and succinct investigative reports and deliver briefings for senior personnel and other federal, state, and local agencies.
  • Identify and apprehend drug traffickers and arrest individuals engaged in criminal drug activities.
  • Gather and analyze evidence through investigative leads, seizures, arrests, execution of search warrants, and other means.
  • Testify on behalf of the federal government in court or before grand juries.
  • Additional duties may be assigned based on individual knowledge, skills, and experience.
Basic Agent Training

Applicants who have not completed previous federal law‑enforcement training through another agency must attend and complete a 16‑week residential training program. Current or former GL‑1811 applicants who have successfully completed a Federal Criminal Investigation training program through another agency may qualify for a 3‑week Special Agent Transition Program (FCIT transcripts must be attached).

Requirements
  • U.S. citizenship required.
  • Must obtain and maintain a Top‑Secret security clearance.
  • Must sign a mobility agreement confirming readiness for relocation.
  • Completion of pre‑employment medical clearance and annual medical examination.
  • Full‑scope pre‑employment polygraph required (reciprocity available for prior polygraph).
  • Selective Service registration or exemption required for eligible males.
  • Age 21–36 unless veteran or federal law‑enforcement retirement covered position.
  • Successfully pass the E‑Verify employment verification check.
  • Serve a 1‑ or 2‑year trial period to evaluate fitness.
  • Maintain valid state driver’s license.
  • Subject to random drug testing.
  • Successfully complete basic agent training (16–20 weeks) at DEA Training Academy.
Qualifications

Applicants must meet the required qualification requirements described below by the closing of the announcement.

For GL‑07 Level
  • One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GL/GS‑05 level, including:
    • Assisting in investigations.
    • Writing reports.
    • Researching, collecting, and analyzing data from multiple sources.
    (Or) One full year of graduate‑level education in a relevant field. (Or) Superior Academic Achievement (SAA) from a bachelor’s degree with GPA ≥ 3.0 or membership in a national honor society.
  • Senior students may be considered for GL‑07 based on grades during the last nine months of degree completion.
For GL‑09 Level
  • One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GL/GS‑07 level, including:
    • Assisting in investigations.
    • Collecting/analyzing data.
    • Writing reports, briefing, and supporting prosecutors.
    • Testifying in court or legislative proceedings.
    (Or) Master’s degree or 2 years of graduate education or LL.B./J.D. (Or) Combination of education and experience totaling 100% of required criteria.
For GS‑11 Level
  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GL/GS‑09 level, including:
    • Supporting federal criminal investigations.
    • Developing operational plans.
    • Operating undercover and surveillance.
    • Interviewing and interrogating.
    • Organizing evidence and testifying in court.
    (Or) Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 years of graduate education leading to a Ph.D. (Or) Combination of education and experience totaling 100% of required criteria.
Education & Foreign Education

Education must be accredited by a U.S. Department of Education‑recognized accrediting institution. Foreign education may be used if comparable to U.S. accredited education. Provide evidence when applying.

Additional Information
  • Appointments will be made under Schedule B, excepted service. Conversion to permanent career appointments possible after 3–4 years.
  • Trial period of 1–2 years to evaluate fitness; performance and conduct considered.
  • Legal requirement to maintain firearm proficiency and comply with the Lautenberg Amendment.
  • Missing medical or physical disqualifying conditions will result in disqualification.
