Essential

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

Asphalt Rolling and Compaction
  • Safely operate breakdown rollers, finish rollers, steel drum rollers, and other assigned compaction equipment during asphalt paving operations.
  • Compact hot-mix asphalt using appropriate rolling patterns, speeds, and overlapping passes to achieve required density, smoothness, and surface uniformity.
  • Follow project plans, applicable DOT specifications, contract requirements, approved paving procedures, and instructions from the foreman or superintendent.
  • Maintain proper rolling sequence and timing in coordination with the paver, screed operator, and other roller operators.
  • Monitor asphalt temperature, material conditions, and compaction progress to help prevent checking, shoving, cracking, ridges, marks, and other surface imperfections.
  • Make appropriate adjustments to rolling speed, vibration, and pass patterns within established procedures and supervisor direction.
  • Operate equipment to compact asphalt pavement on roadways, shoulders, intersections, ramps, parking areas, and other assigned surfaces.
  • Assist in achieving specified pavement smoothness, compaction, and finish requirements.
  • Work with the paving crew to maintain consistent production and minimize unnecessary delays or interruptions.
DOT and Project Compliance:
  • Perform assigned work in accordance with applicable DOT Standard Specifications, project special provisions, plans, and contract requirements.
  • Follow approved paving and compaction procedures established for the project.
  • Cooperate with the foreman, superintendent, quality control personnel, and authorized project representatives as directed.
  • Maintain awareness of project limits, designated work areas, traffic control devices, and construction sequencing.
Equipment Operation and Maintenance
  • Perform pre-operation inspections and required daily safety checks of assigned equipment.
  • Identify and report mechanical problems, equipment damage, fluid leaks, and unsafe operating conditions.
  • Perform routine cleaning, lubrication, and preventive maintenance as assigned and within the operator's training.
  • Maintain equipment in a clean, safe, and serviceable condition.
  • Operate equipment only when authorized and trained to do so.
  • Secure equipment properly at the end of the shift and follow company procedures for parking, shutdown, and transport.
Safety and Teamwork
  • Follow company safety policies, applicable OSHA requirements, project-specific safety procedures, and established work-zone traffic control requirements.
  • Maintain awareness of coworkers, moving equipment, public traffic, pedestrians, and other hazards in active construction areas.
  • Follow established communication procedures when maneuvering near the paver, trucks, other rollers, and ground personnel.
  • Wear required personal protective equipment, including high-visibility apparel, safety footwear, and hearing protection as applicable.
  • Immediately report workplace injuries, incidents, near misses, unsafe conditions, and equipment damage.
  • Participate in required safety meetings, training, and jobsite briefings.
  • Assist with other paving and construction-related duties within the employee's training and authorization.
  • Report any conditions that may prevent the work from meeting project specifications to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
