Cues for Cancer is partnering with Virginia Wesleyan University to offer ongoing theatre and vocal workshops that inspire hope, healing, and self-expression for adults 18+. We are seeking a Volunteer Theatre & Voice Instructor to lead dynamic, process-driven classes focused on acting, storytelling, and vocal development in a supportive, community‑centered environment.
This is an on‑site volunteer role located in Virginia Beach, VA. The instructor will teach 2 evenings per week, working with groups of approximately 10–20 adult participants (18+).
Role OverviewThe Volunteer Theatre & Voice Instructor will design and facilitate acting and vocal workshops that may include:
- Acting fundamentals (improvisation, scene study, monologue work, character development)
- Storytelling and confidence‑building exercises
- Ensemble‑building and collaborative performance projects
The heart of this role is to help participants explore their voices—spoken and sung—while building confidence, connection, and joy through the performing arts. Your work will directly support the mission of Cues for Cancer by cultivating a safe, empowering, and uplifting space for adults to grow artistically and personally.
Schedule & Location- Timeframe:
Beginning January 2026 - Hours:
Approximately 6:30 PM – 8:30 PM EST (final schedule TBD) - Participants:
Adults 18+, approx. 10–20 per class
- Develop and lead engaging theatre and voice classes tailored to adult learners (18+).
- Create lesson plans that incorporate:
- Acting exercises, warm‑ups, and rehearsal techniques
- Vocal warm‑ups and technique‑building activities
- Opportunities for performance, reflection, and feedback
- Submit lesson plans in advance for review and approval by Cues for Cancer staff.
- Collaborate with Cues for Cancer staff, welcoming edits, adjustments, and co‑creation of curriculum to align with organizational mission and program goals.
- Offer foundational music theory and/or theatre literacy as appropriate to support participants’ growth.
- Foster a positive, inclusive, and trauma‑aware learning environment that honors each participant’s journey.
- Encourage creativity, confidence, and ensemble spirit through thoughtful, compassionate coaching.
- Strong skills in vocal coaching, vocal instruction, and/or voice lessons with the ability to safely guide and develop participants’ vocal abilities.
- Experience and/or training in theatre, acting, directing, musical theatre, or vocal performance.
- Working knowledge of music theory and/or music education concepts that can enhance the learning experience.
- Genuine passion for the performing arts and a commitment to uplifting and empowering participants through theatre and music.
- Excellent communication skills, patience, and the ability to create a nurturing, supportive learning space.
- Ability to collaborate with organizational staff and integrate feedback into lesson planning and teaching.
- Previous teaching, coaching, or workshop facilitation experience is highly beneficial, especially with adult learners.
