• Plan and provide appropriate services for students under the direction of the building principal.
• Create an atmosphere conducive to the intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development of all students.
• Monitor and evaluate student outcomes.
• Communicate and interact with students, parents, staff, and community.
• Develop, select, and modify guidance lessons and materials to meet the needs of all students.
• Ensure the proper use and care of equipment, materials, and facilities.

• Provide services to students in the areas of academic, personal/social, and career development.
• Conduct individual and small-group counseling.
• Carry out classroom guidance activities.
• Expose students to career exploration and interest inventories (e.g., Kuder, VA Career View, VA Mentor, Workplace Readiness Skills).
• Review school data frequently to ensure the counseling program meets all students’ academic, career, personal, and social development needs.
• Prepare reports, records, and all other required information and data.
• Encourage teacher/parent communication and community involvement.
• Assist students in conflict resolution and identify students with special needs.
• Refer students to intervention/remediation programs, academic and alternative programs, and appropriate school personnel and community agencies.
• Participate in SST, Child Study, 504 meetings, parent/teacher conferences, and division-wide counselor meetings.
• Serve as a resource for school personnel and parents.
• Maintain files/records and a departmental library of supplementary and reference materials.
• Follow required procedures and practices.
• Submit monthly time and task reports electronically.
• Participate in professional development activities and perform related work as required.
• Manage crises and interpret student records.
• Initiate student programs.
• Provide in‑services for instructional staff and create a school counseling calendar.

Knowledge of counseling theories, group dynamics, small group processes, and K‑12 child and multicultural development. Extensive knowledge of the ASCA Model, Virginia Standards of Learning, and the juvenile justice system. Working knowledge of student database systems, standardized testing, gifted and special education programs, FERPA, IDEA, McKinney‑Vento Act, ESL laws, and other state/federal mandates. Excellent oral and written communication and human relations skills;

ability to work with administrators, colleagues, staff, students, parents, and the community.

Required:

Master’s Degree from an approved school counseling education program or endorsement in school counseling with Virginia certification in school counseling. A comparable amount of training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.

Use of sensory skills to communicate and interact with others. Frequent sitting, walking, bending, grasping, and repetitive motion. Ability to lift up to 20 pounds. Requires compliance with established work schedules. Reasonable accommodations are available for individuals with disabilities.

Possession of a valid driver’s license. Regular and reliable attendance is essential.
