Health and Physical Education Teacher (An Achievable Dream Academy)
Join Virginia Beach City Public Schools as a Health and Physical Education Teacher for the An Achievable Dream Academy. This full‑time position starts in the 2025‑2026 school year.
General ResponsibilitiesUnder the direction of the principal, develop and deliver instructional programs that promote the intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development of students. Supervise and monitor students in various school settings, evaluate outcomes, and maintain required records. Interact with students, parents, staff, and the community while ensuring safe use and care of equipment and facilities.
Essential Functions- Plan a program of study that meets student needs, interests, and abilities.
- Consistently instruct assigned classes at designated locations and times.
- Create a classroom environment that encourages student involvement and helps each student reach learning objectives.
- Provide instructional programs for all students and prepare lesson plans with documented evidence of preparation.
- Guide learning toward curriculum goals, establish clear objectives for lessons, units, and projects, and communicate these objectives.
- Utilize instructional methods, resources, and evaluation techniques that motivate students.
- Take safety precautions to protect students, equipment, and facilities.
- Maintain accurate records required by law, policy, and regulation.
- Support administration in implementing policies and rules governing student conduct, develop classroom behavior policies, and maintain classroom order.
- Be available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day when required.
- Build respectful relationships with colleagues, students, parents, and community members.
- Plan and supervise teacher assistant and volunteer assignments.
- Appraise own effectiveness and pursue professional competence improvement.
- Participate in school management and share responsibility for the total school program.
- Attend staff meetings and serve on committees as required.
- Perform other duties as required.
Knowledge of VBCPS curriculum and techniques for integrating curriculum with policies and effective instructional practices; thorough understanding of the teaching and learning process; ability to provide instruction that reflects multiple perspectives and multicultural education; ability to integrate technology into curriculum; ability to work effectively with administrators, colleagues, central office, and community; excellent oral and written communication and human relations skills.
Education and ExperienceRequired: Bachelor’s Degree in an applicable field of education from an accredited college or university. Must hold or be eligible for a Virginia Department of Education teacher license.
Physical RequirementsUse of sensory skills for communication and interaction with others. Frequent sitting, walking, standing, bending, grasping, repetitive motion, and reaching. Occasional stooping and kneeling. Ability to lift up to 20 pounds frequently and up to 50 pounds rarely. Requires adherence to established work schedules. Reasonable accommodations may be provided for disabilities.
Special RequirementsValid driver’s license. Regular and reliable attendance is essential.
