The Department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering (MAE) within the Batten College of Engineering and Technology (BCET) at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA invites applications for a tenure‑track Assistant Professor position in mechanical and aerospace engineering, starting Fall 2026. This is an annual 10-month appointment.
We seek candidates with expertise in high‑speed flow, aerothermodynamics modeling, gas‑surface thermochemical interactions, propulsion, and plasma physics related to hypersonic flight. We also welcome applicants with relevant aerospace engineering backgrounds that will complement and enhance our department’s existing strengths. Ideal candidates will be capable of teaching in these specialized areas and more, while actively contributing to our research and service missions.
They should establish and maintain an externally funded research program, provide quality instruction at both undergraduate and graduate levels, mentor students in research, and participate in departmental, college, university, and professional activities.
Earned Ph.D. in Aerospace engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related field by May 2026.
Minimum required level and type of experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities- Demonstrated potential for excellence in research and scholarly publications.
- Have experience of conducting sponsored research.
- Have experience in teaching.
- Have plans for developing interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research collaborations to advance the aerospace engineering program in the department.

About the DepartmentThe department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering is comprised of 25 faculty, 643 undergraduate students, and 93 graduate students. Current research areas include advanced manufacturing, materials, mechatronics and automation, biomechanics, biomedical engineering, unmanned and space systems, renewable energy, computational fluid dynamics, and thermal‑fluid systems. The MAE department houses well‑equipped laboratories where faculty and students conduct research on diverse topics ranging from micromechanics and cellular mechanobiology to smart systems, composites, and robotics.
The faculty conduct research in collaborations with the NASA, Thomas Jefferson Lab, Naval Shipyard and Naval Warfare Centers. Active student chapters include ASME, AIAA, SAE, Pi Tau Sigma, SWE, NSBE, ASB and SHPE. More information on the department can be found at .
