Job description for a veterinary assistant.

Summary: The Veterinary Assistant supports veterinarians and veterinary technicians in providing care for animals. This role involves assisting in medical procedures, maintaining a clean and safe environment, and enhancing the overall experience for clients and their pets.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist veterinarians during examinations and medical procedures.
  • Prepare animals and equipment for surgery and other procedures.
  • Administer medications and vaccinations as directed by the veterinarian.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the clinic, including sterilization of instruments.
  • Provide general care and feeding for animals in the clinic.
  • Record keeping and updating of patients' medical files.
  • Educate clients on basic pet care and post‑treatment care instructions.
  • Assist in handling and restraining animals safely and humanely.

Required Skills:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Previous experience in a veterinary or animal care setting is preferred.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to handle animals safely and compassionately.
  • Basic understanding of animal behavior and medical terminology.
  • Physical stamina to lift and restrain pets of various sizes.
  • Attention to detail and ability to follow instructions precisely.
  • Certification as a Veterinary Assistant (preferred but not required).
