Recreation Assistant (Lifeguard)

Dam Neck Annex, VA – Navy Region Mid‑Atlantic Fleet and Family Readiness (FFR)
This position is assigned to the Non‑Appropriated Fund (NAF) Fitness, Sports, and Deployed Support Branch;
Fleet Readiness;
Commander, Navy Installations Command (CNIC). The incumbent provides lifeguard duties, safeguards lives at the work area, assists with aquatic training, education, and general support at the installation.
The role focuses primarily on pool and/or waterfront lifeguard responsibilities (60% of the time) and general aquatics support duties (40% of the time).
Responsibilities- Supervise swimmers/patrons and their activities; monitor natural water activities, enforce safety rules, report hazards, and perform water rescues as necessary.
- Observe and address potential hazards such as floating debris, glass, or adverse water/chemical conditions.
- Provide prompt CPR or emergency first aid and call for medical assistance when needed.
- Conduct and document pool chemical testing; check chlorine and pH levels, notify the Certified Pool Operator or supervisor of imbalances, and adjust chemicals as directed.
- Document marine life, water conditions, and weather conditions.
- Administer aquatic assessment testing and certification in accordance with DoD, DON, and CNIC policy.
- Offer introductory equipment orientations and check identification cards for authorized patrons while collecting usage fees, if applicable.
- Serve as the primary liaison among activity, security, medical departments, and the Aquatics Coordinator during emergencies.
- Perform cleaning duties (vacuuming, skimming, etc.) and routine facility maintenance as assigned.
- Inspect stands, boards, ropes, safety gear, and dressing rooms to ensure compliance with environmental health standards.
- Maintain and use emergency equipment such as specialized kits, backboards, suction devices, splints, and stretchers.
- Enforce applicable MWR policies concerning the use of aquatic facilities and waterfront operations.
- Prepare accident/incident reports during emergencies and notify management immediately.
- Handle hazardous materials such as cleaning agents and pool chemicals safely.
- Starting May 7, 2025, non‑affiliated individuals accessing CNRMA installations will need a REAL ‑compliant driver’s license or another acceptable identification.
- Must pass all applicable records and background checks.
- Must successfully pass the E‑Verify employment verification check.
- Knowledge of pool and waterfront safety rules.
- Knowledge of DoD, DON, and CNIC policies governing aquatic assessment testing and certifications.
- Knowledge of MWR policies for aquatic facilities.
- Knowledge of cash handling procedures.
- Ability to identify hazards or hazardous situations and respond to patron needs immediately.
- Ability to provide instruction on water safety and enforce facility rules effectively.
- Ability to conduct routine safety inspections of the facility and pool area.
- Knowledge of and ability to conduct pool chemical testing, document results, and adjust imbalances.
- Proficiency in surf lifesaving techniques and radio communication for rescue operations.
- Ability to manage large groups of people.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
No positive education requirement.

Salary is dependent on experience and/or education. Some positions may require a one‑year probationary period, participation in Direct Deposit/Electronic Fund Transfer within the first 30 days, and use of E‑Verify.
