The Counselor, High School
, is responsible for coordinating and implementing a comprehensive school counseling program to include academic advisement, social/personal counseling, career exploration, and parent/community involvement.
Responsibilities
- Provides an ongoing program of individual, small group, and large group counseling services in the areas of academic advisement and planning, career exploration, and social/personal development per the national standards established by the American School Counselor Association.
- Consults and works collaboratively with administrators, teachers, school personnel, district personnel, parents, and various community agencies to meet the counseling and educational planning needs of high school students, including school wide needs.
- Provides information to parents and students regarding graduation requirements, options, and acceleration mechanisms.
- Interprets and utilizes school records, including cognitive, aptitude, and achievement tests, for educational planning. Reviews and evaluates student records and transcripts.
- Addresses individual student needs and refers students to appropriate school and community resources as necessary.
- Provides preventive and responsive services, including crisis counseling as needed, and addresses student mental health needs as appropriate.
- Facilitates the involvement of parents in the education of their students, including assisting in parent/teacher/counselor conferences.
- Assists students in developing self-understanding, self-acceptance, and effective interpersonal skills.
- Performs any other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
A master's degree in School Counseling is required.
Certificates/Licenses/Registrations:
Florida Professional Educator Certificate:
Guidance and Counseling (Grades PK-12) is required.

Skills:
Reads, analyzes, and interprets all kinds of documents. Responds to inquiries or complaints from employees, regulatory agencies, or community. Writes speeches and effectively presents to managers, the public, and school board.
Mathematical
Skills:
Adds, subtracts, multiplies, and divides in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Computes rate, ratio, and percent and draws and interprets bar graphs.
Reasoning Ability:
Solves practical problems and deals with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Interprets a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
