Patient Care Technician – New Kent Emergency Department (Rotating)

Job Summary

The Patient Care Technician provides direct, age‑specific care to patients or groups of patients based on medical orders and the plan of care under the direction of the RN or licensed independent practitioner.

Essential Job Functions
  • Provide safe and direct care to patients in their assigned unit with age‑appropriate adjustments as needed.
  • Monitor patients’ conditions and provide updates to the health care team.
  • Deliver care in accordance with nursing and medical plans of care and VCUHS Nursing and Hospital policy and procedure.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, stocked environment to support patient needs and unit function.
  • Maintain supplies, educational material, equipment and sterilization to promote quality and safety.
  • Accurately identify patients and report any safety concerns to the licensed independent practitioner, manager or RN.
  • Obtain and record initial and ongoing patient information (admissions data, vital signs, height, weight, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, intake/output, calorie counts, etc.) as outlined by VCUHS policy.
  • Assist in specimen collection for diagnostic or waived tests.
  • Attend all mandatory in‑services and training and complete online training requirements.
  • Participate in hospital, department or unit patient safety initiatives.
  • Establish and maintain courteous rapport with patients, visitors, co‑workers and other health‑care team members.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned.
Patient Population

Provides equitable care appropriate to the age of patients served. Supports neonatal (0‑4 weeks), infant (1‑12 months), pediatric (1‑12 years), adolescent (13‑17 years), adult (18‑64 years) and geriatric (65+ years) populations.

Employment Qualifications
  • Required

    Education:

    High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Preferred Education: Certified Nursing Assistant.


  • Licensure/Certification

    Required:

    AHA BLS HCP Certification or equivalent.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Certification or completion of one of the following:
    Certified Nursing Assistant, Medical Assistant, Emergency Medical Technician, Military Corpsman/Medic, Nursing Aide Training Program, or experience within a healthcare environment.
  • Or completion of foundations/clinical nursing course and one clinical rotation.

  • Patient data collection and documentation (vital signs, intake/output, changes in condition).
  • Basic hygiene and activities of daily living care.
  • Assistance with feeding, hydration and nutrition.
  • Assistance with ambulation and patient mobility.
  • Safe, compassionate care.
  • Accountability for completing assigned tasks.
  • Use of personal protective equipment as needed.

Physical Requirements

Lift/carry up to 100 lbs., push/pull, climb, stoop, kneel, squat, balance, bend. Requires manual dexterity, shift work, ability to maneuver patient weight, reach above shoulder and perform repetitive arm/hand movements.
