Position Summary

The Medical Director of the Emergency Department provides leadership and oversight for all clinical, administrative, and quality functions within the Emergency Department while actively practicing as an emergency physician. This position includes scheduled 24‑hour clinical shifts in the ER combined with dedicated administrative time for leadership responsibilities. The Medical Director ensures that high‑quality, patient‑centered emergency care is delivered in alignment with Bath Community Hospital’s mission, values, and regulatory standards.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Clinical Responsibilities
  • Provides direct patient care through regularly scheduled 24‑hour ER shifts.
  • Serves as a clinical leader and role model for physicians, advanced practice providers, and nursing staff.
  • Ensures timely, evidence‑based, and compassionate care for all emergency patients.
  • Assists with scheduling and coverage to ensure continuous departmental staffing.
Leadership and Administrative Oversight
  • Oversees daily operations of the Emergency Department in collaboration with nursing leadership.
  • Participates in strategic planning, budgeting, and resource management for the department.
  • Assists with recruitment, onboarding, evaluation, and mentoring of ER physicians and advanced practice providers.
  • Leads departmental meetings and communicates effectively with hospital leadership and medical staff.
  • Creates and manages the monthly and daily schedule for ED providers to ensure 24/7 coverage and operational continuity.
  • Provides administrative and clinical oversight for Emergency Department staff, supporting performance excellence, compliance, and high‑quality patient care.
Quality, Compliance, and Documentation Oversight
  • Ensures compliance with DNV, CMS, EMTALA, and Virginia Department of Health regulations.
  • Monitors provider chart completion for accuracy, timeliness, and completeness; follows up on delinquent or incomplete charts in collaboration with Medical Staff Services and Health Information Management.
  • Works with coding and billing teams to promote proper documentation for accurate reimbursement.
  • Leads quality and performance improvement initiatives to enhance patient safety, clinical outcomes, and throughput.
  • Participates in peer review processes and addresses performance or quality concerns promptly.
Medical Staff Collaboration
  • Serves as liaison between Emergency Department providers, medical staff, and hospital administration.
  • Actively participates in the Medical Executive Committee and other hospital committees as assigned.
  • Collaborates with inpatient providers and ancillary departments to ensure smooth transitions of care and effective communication.
Education and Training
  • Promotes continuing education and professional development for Emergency Department staff.
  • Provides training and updates related to emergency preparedness, disaster response, and clinical best practices.
  • Supports nursing and provider competency validation processes.
Qualifications Education
  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) required.
Licensure/Certification
  • Active and unrestricted Virginia medical license.
  • Board Certified in Emergency Medicine (ABEM or AOBEM).
Experience
  • Minimum of 3–5 years of clinical experience in emergency medicine.
  • Previous leadership or administrative experience preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Strong leadership and communication skills with the ability to foster collaboration across disciplines.
  • Understanding of emergency department operations, quality improvement, and regulatory compliance.
  • Proficiency with EMR systems and data analysis for performance monitoring.
  • Commitment to patient safety and service excellence.
Physical and Environmental Requirements
  • Ability to perform all clinical duties in a hospital emergency environment.
  • Requires frequent standing, walking, bending, and occasional lifting up to 25 lbs.
Work Schedule
  • Combination of 24‑hour clinical shifts and dedicated administrative hours as defined by the hospital.
  • May include nights, weekends, and holidays as part of the provider rotation.
  • Additional administrative meetings or quality reviews may occur outside of scheduled shifts.
