Program Overview

The Food Security and Nutrition Advocate supports and oversees a fully functioning food pharmacy  pharmacy operates 8am-5pm Monday-Friday. The advocate designs nutrition education programs, supports the in-house Nourishing Neighbors group, and provides informal patient nutrition counseling. All materials are sourced from CDC and USDA guidelines. The advocate works closely with BRMC’s Community Health Worker and Community Health Department, and adheres to Blue Ridge Area Food Bank (BRAFB) guidelines.

Duties
  • Attend food pantry distribution days with BRMC CHW during work hours.
  • Prepare proposed orders on a cyclical basis and have them approved by BRMC CHW before ordering.
  • Maintain tracking system of inventory and sign in/out sheets for the food pharmacy.
  • Maintain food pharmacy conditions as detailed by BRAFB and FDA guidelines.
  • Review referral list to food pharmacy and make calls/invitations based on the list.
  • Collect data on attendees, household size, etc. of those utilizing food pharmacy.
  • Attend and prepare lessons for patients.
  • Participate in SNAP training with BRAFB/VDH and demonstrate ability to help refer patients to the program.
  • Create and update nutritional guides for various chronic diseases using CDC and USDA training materials.
  • Attend the monthly Saturday Nelson Pantry distribution and various monthly community outreach events per BRMC CHW current involvements.
