How You’ll Help Transform Healthcare: The Rehabilitation Aide works under the direction of a physical therapist, occupational therapist, speech language pathologist, physical therapy assistant or occupational therapy assistant, assists in providing therapeutic services, related clinical activities and maintaining the orderly function of the department.

The Rehabilitation Aide

Responsibilities
  • Assists the therapists and therapy assistants in providing safe, effective and quality therapeutic interventions for patients taking into consideration the patient’s age and developmental level. Performs delegated, selected tasks in specific situations under the direction of an occupational/physical therapist, and/or speech-language pathologist.
  • Transports patients to and from therapy in an effective manner incorporating safe management of transfer equipment such as wheelchairs and stretchers.
  • Prepares patient treatment area for therapy session including gym area, patients' room, hydrotherapy to maintain a clean field, and cleans equipment according to infection control guidelines. Follows instructions for room set up prior to treatment session and return patient's room to order.
  • Maintains supplies and keeps the department in a safe, neat and orderly condition. Completes additional assigned tasks and follows JCAHO and biomedical guidelines for maintaining safe equipment.
  • Coordinates/collaborates patient care/clinical activities with patients, families, therapists and other members of the health care team to achieve efficient clinical activity and communication.
  • Performs basic clerical functions including but not limited to answering the phone, scheduling, taking phone messages, copying, filing, entering charges into the computer, and checking and verifying patient charges. Collects data for performance improvement, departmental initiatives, and scorecard projects.
  • Enhances personal growth by attending in-services and departmental meetings, participates in departmental program development and growth, and completes peer review for performance evaluations. Will maintain annual departmental competencies, hospital required in-services, and other specific information for yearly performance evaluation.
  • Serves as a resource and team member to other rehabilitation aides by participating in new employee orientation and completion of orientation competency sign offs.
  • Orients new employees. Will work under the direct supervision of professional staff or as per site policy and procedures.
  • Interacts with patients, physicians, and other health care providers, families, visitors, management, ancillary departments, and the general public. May have to deal with difficult patients, families, and other customers. Assists therapists in the areas of physical, occupational and/or speech-language pathologists as requested through written/verbal communication.
  • Accesses and may update confidential patient healthcare records. Follows HIPAA guidelines.
  • Recommends cost containment initiatives in immediate work area.
  • Utilizes good judgment through basic patient observation skills and provides input to therapists.
  • Allows therapists to provide early therapeutic intervention on patients who require additional assistance. Contributes to meeting the clerical functions of the department.
  • Working Conditions:

    Work is performed primarily indoors in a clinical setting including hospital, nursing home or outpatient sites. May be required to work at other Carilion facilities to meet staffing needs, in which case will provide own transportation. Work requires physical activity with patients including lifting, manipulating, pushing, pulling, bending and walking. Patients may weigh over 200 pounds. Occasional exposure to serious injury and frequent environmental hazards to include blood and bodily fluids requiring standard precautions.
