Patient Care Technician OverviewThe Patient Care Technician provides direct, age‑specific care to patients or groups of patients based on medical orders and the plan of care under the direction of the RN or licensed independent practitioner.
Essential Job Functions- Provide safe and direct care to patients in the assigned unit with age‑appropriate adjustments. Monitor conditions and update the health‑care team.
- Deliver direct and indirect care to patients with and without medical/surgical complications to meet comfort, personal hygiene, and safety needs.
- Follow nursing and medical plans of care and VCUHS nursing and hospital policy and procedure.
- Maintain a safe, clean, stocked clinical environment to support patient needs and unit function.
- Maintain supplies, educational material, equipment, and sterilization to promote quality, safe patient care outcomes.
- Contribute to the patient experience by accurately identifying the patient, observing safety goals, and reporting safety or care concerns to the appropriate providers.
- Obtain and record patient information (admissions data, vitals, height/weight, BP, O₂ sat, intake/output, etc.) throughout the cycle of care per VCUHS policy.
- Collect specimens for diagnostic or waived tests.
- Attend all mandatory in‑services and trainings; complete online training requirements.
- Ensure patient safety in all job functions and participate in patient safety initiatives.
- Establish courteous rapport with patients, visitors, co‑workers, and the health‑care team; respond promptly to verbal or written instructions.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Demonstrates knowledge and skills to provide equitable care appropriate to the age of patients served.
Knowledge of growth and development principles and ability to assess patients’ status to identify age‑specific needs.
Neonates (0‑4 weeks), Infant (1‑12 months), Pediatrics (1‑12 years), Adolescents (13‑17 years), Adults (18‑64 years), Geriatrics (65+ years).
Employment Qualifications Required EducationHigh School Diploma or equivalent.
Preferred EducationCertified Nursing Assistant.
Licensure/Certification RequiredAHA BLS HCP Certification or equivalent.
Licensure/Certification PreferredNone.
Minimum QualificationsRequired Qualifications
- Certification/Completion of one of the following:
Certified Nursing Assistant, Medical Assistant, EMT, Military Corpsman/Medic, Nursing Aide Training Program, or experience within a healthcare environment. - OR Completion of foundations/clinical nursing course and one clinical rotation.
- Patient data collection and documentation (vital signs, intake/output, change in condition).
- Basic hygiene and activities of daily living care.
- Assistance with feeding, hydration, and nutrition.
- Assistance with ambulation and mobility.
- Safe, compassionate care.
- Accountability for completion of assigned tasks.
- Proper use of personal protective equipment.

Other Knowledge, Skills & Abilities PreferredAcute care experience as a nursing assistant or aide.
Working Conditions- High stress, fluctuating workloads.

- Exposure to high noise levels, bright lights, and hazardous substances/bodily fluids.
- Potential for constant interruptions.
Universal precautions, use of personal protective equipment, and infection control policies are mandatory.

Physical Requirements /Hazards
Manual dexterity, shift work, weight maneuvering, hearing alarms, reaching above shoulder, repetitive arm/hand movements, finger dexterity. Hazards include depth perception, exposure to chemicals, moving mechanical parts, radiation/electromagnetic energy, and high‑pitch noises.
Mental/Sensory – EmotionalStrong recall, reasoning, problem solving, hearing, speaking clearly, writing legibly, reading, logical thinking. Ability to handle fast pace, multiple priorities, intense interactions, and noisy environment.
