General Description
The Family Advocate is responsible for carrying out the goals and objectives of the Head Start Program Performance Standards pertaining to services for families. The Family Advocate will provide support to the child and family participating in the program; serve as a resource to the family; and act as a liaison between Head Start, the family and the community.
Specific Responsibilities Eligibility, Recruitment, Enrollment and Attendance- Assist in recruiting eligible children for the program
- Assist in completion of program application and obtaining income verification, proof of residency
- Assist family in compiling requisite documentation for enrollment
- Follow up with the family during extended absences
- In collaboration with the family, complete a family partnership agreement for all assigned families
- Establish a case management system of referrals and follow up to assist assigned families in reaching goals
- Serve as a two‑way communication link between families, teachers, centers and support staff
- Participate in monthly case management with Family Systems Specialists and Health Manager
- Participate in monthly student meetings with assigned classroom teachers
- Participate in monthly dual enrollment meetings
- Participate in staff meetings
- Participate in parent meeting, trainings, and/or events
- Is responsible for using a personal Orange County Public Schools email address to facilitate electronic communication
- In collaboration with the teacher and parent officers, plan and conduct monthly parent meetings
- Gathering and inputting into Health workbook, screenings, tests, referrals, complete follow‑up as directed
- Assisting Families with EPSDT requirements
- Assist with Health Advisory Committee
- Assist families of children with special needs by providing information and support and referring them to teacher or Disabilities Coordinator, remind families of meetings
- Maintain accurate, up to date records of Family Partnership Agreements, tracking progress and follow‑up
- Maintain records of family contacts, home visits
- Maintain a central filing system on assigned children including health records, screening records, enrollment documentation and special services (if applicable)
- Mandated to report any suspected abuse or neglect of children in the home or the classroom to the Orange County Department of Social Services, Child Protective Services Unit
- Participate in Head Start training, career and personal development activities as recommended by specialist or supervisor
- Must have a physical examination to begin work
- Adherence to the NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct
- TB screening and CPR training required
- Covering classrooms when needed
- Minimum requirement of GED or High School Diploma and have within 18 months of hire, a minimum of a credential or certification in social work, human services, family services, counseling or a related field
- Must have a valid Virginia Driver’s License and have access to a vehicle. Knowledge of adult education and local community resources are helpful
- Must hold current CPR/First Aid certification
