About the role

Specialty Camp Junior Counselors support our one-week themed camps, Arts, STEM, Cooking, Athletics, Drama, by assisting the Counselor who plans and leads the curriculum. You’ll help with setup/cleanup, small-group facilitation, and smooth transitions so sessions stay safe, inclusive, and on time.

Responsibilities
  • Assist the Specialty Camp Counselor with daily activities, station rotations, and group management for the assigned theme.
  • Set up/clean up materials and spaces; keep storage labeled, tidy, and ready for rapid turnarounds.
  • Support small groups and individual campers; offer age-appropriate guidance, encouragement, and behavior reminders.
  • Follow all safety procedures for the specialty (e.g., tool rules, gym/play protocols, allergy/food-handling in Cooking); report concerns promptly.
  • Help track inventory, check equipment in/out, and restock supplies as directed.
  • Monitor environment (heat/hydration, trip hazards, sanitation); assist with incident/accident documentation as directed.
  • Collaborate with Counselors and Day Camp staff for clear roles, smooth transitions, and inclusive participation.
  • Meet or exceed ACA practices and Virginia child day program licensing standards.
  • Maintain professionalism and confidentiality; be punctual, prepared, and flexible; perform other duties as assigned by the Camp Director or designee.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with children (camp, classroom aide, coaching, clubs, babysitting) and interest in one or more areas:
    Arts, STEM, Cooking, Athletics, Drama (preferred).
  • Positive, coachable teammate with strong communication and group support skills; calm under pressure.
  • Organized and safety-minded; comfortable indoors/outdoors and moving equipment/materials
  • First Aid/CPR certification (or willingness to obtain before the season and maintain throughout).
  • Reliability and professionalism.
Eligibility

Typically a rising high-school junior or senior (generally 16+) and able to meet required background/screening checks per Virginia regulations.
