Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Health Office of Drinking Water seeks an Environmental Specialist Supervisor to join the Abingdon Field Office (AFO) team in providing management of groundwater and consecutive waterworks program, performance management of Environmental Specialists, and assistance, guidance, and support for public water systems to maintain compliance with regulatory requirements and sustainability. AFO covers the 17 counties and four independent cities of far Southwest Virginia.

Abingdon is a rural area with four distinct seasons, outdoor recreation opportunities, close access to several higher education institutions, and home of the state theater of Virginia. AFO staff are collaborative, responsive, and maintain effective relationships with public drinking water systems.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of biology, microbiology, chemistry, and math.
  • Working knowledge of technology associated with provision of drinking water.
  • Ability to use computers for word processing and data management.
  • Ability to communicate in English in writing, orally, interpersonally, and before groups and public meetings.
  • Ability to interpret regulations and technical documents.
  • Ability to effectively supervise others.
  • Additional Considerations
    • Experience conducting sanitary surveys or environmental risk assessments.
    • Knowledge of SDWA and Virginia Waterworks Regulations.
    • Ability to manage a regulatory program.
