Division Chief of Pediatric Anesthesiology
The University of Virginia Department of Anesthesiology is seeking a Division Chief for Pediatric Anesthesiology. The applicant must have served in an academic faculty position as a pediatric anesthesiologist for at least 3 years and possess significant leadership experience.
Description
The Division Chief will promote excellence in perioperative care for patients undergoing pediatric surgery or procedures across all clinical locations. They will maintain and improve the quality and efficiency of anesthesia services, create and execute a vision and strategy for the division, and support faculty mentoring and development.
Reporting
The Division Chief reports to the Chair, Executive Vice Chair, Vice Chair of Clinical Operations, and various vice chairs of the Department of Anesthesiology. The Section Chief for Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesia reports to the Division Chief.
Responsibilities- Design protocols and processes to optimize anesthesia provision for pediatric surgical and interventional procedures.
- Collaborate with nursing leadership, surgeons, and proceduralists to ensure optimal workflow.
- Develop and maintain a robust pediatric sedation service with nursing, imaging, and out‑of‑OR leaders.
- Address quality issues and concerns from (Be Safe) events related to pediatric anesthesia.
- Attend > 65% of monthly departmental leadership meetings.
- Hold and lead regular division meetings (at least 6 per year) to discuss opportunities related to pediatric anesthesia services.
- Work closely with residency director and Vice Chair for Education to meet residents’ educational goals and maintain a robust didactic curriculum.
- Mentor division faculty, collaborating with the Vice Chair for Faculty Development to achieve career progression.
- Nominate faculty for local, regional, and national awards in coordination with Vice Chair for Faculty Development.
- Promote the academic mission of the division and ensure faculty representation in national specialty meetings.
- Participate in faculty annual evaluation process by providing feedback on division members’ contributions to clinical care, education, research, and community engagement.
- Ensure billing compliance within the division and partner with administrative leadership for billing optimization.
- Assist in workforce modeling and recruitment of new faculty to meet division needs.
- Co‑develop a robust orientation program for new faculty joining UVA’s Department of Anesthesiology.
- Promote ASPIRE values and foster a diverse, equitable, and inclusive work environment.
Qualified candidates must have an MD or equivalent degree, completed an anesthesiology residency program and a pediatric anesthesiology fellowship, and be American Board of Anesthesiology certified or certification‑eligible.
At minimum, the applicant must have served as a pediatric anesthesiology faculty member for at least 3 years and have significant leadership experience.
