This is a combination position that serves as both a teacher (40% of the time) and HVAC technician (60% of the time). This is also a 12-month position (245-day contract).
SummaryTeacher:
Assist students in learning the subject matter and skills that will contribute to their development as mature, able, and responsible individuals. Create conditions that will encourage and stimulate learning. Teach two courses, each taught 3 days a week.
Technician:
Responsible for performing skilled and technical work in the installation, service, maintenance, and repair of refrigeration, air conditioning, heating, ventilation, BAS controls, frequency drives, oil-fired boilers, and related equipment to maintain optimal environmental conditions in all PCPS buildings. Serve as a technician when not teaching the 2 courses.
– Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Be professionally and personally responsible for the order and progress of classes under his/her authority, direction, and supervision.
- Develop lesson plans and instructional materials to provide individualized and small-group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to meet the needs of each student.
- Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.
- Prepare lessons for students assigned and demonstrate written evidence of preparation upon request of the immediate supervisor.
- Plan and supervise purposeful assignments for teacher instructional assistants, volunteers, and substitute teachers.
- Establish and maintain standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.
- Guide the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and, in congruence with those goals, establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects, and communicate those objectives to students.
- Create an effective environment for learning through functional and attractive displays, bulletin boards, and interest centers.
- Employ a variety of instructional techniques, technology, and instructional media, consistent with the physical limitations of the location provided and the needs and capabilities of the individuals or student groups involved.
- Evaluate students’ academic and social growth using a variety of data sources; keep appropriate records and prepare progress reports.
- Strive to implement through instruction and action the division’s philosophy of education and instructional goals and objectives.
- Select and requisition books, instructional materials, and supplies, and maintain required inventory records.
- Assess the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provide progress reports as required.
- Set an annual goal (or goals) for improving student achievement, using results of an initial assessment.
- Diagnose the instructional needs of students on a regular basis, seeking the assistance of division specialists as required.
- Administer, review, and analyze class standardized tests in accordance with division testing programs.
- Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
- Maintain accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, division policy, and administrative procedures.
- Attend staff meetings, PTO meetings, and serve on staff committees as required.
- Assist the administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct, and develop reasonable classroom rules to maintain order in a fair and just manner.
- Seat students in a manner that expedites the learning process without stigmatizing students.
- Guide the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals established by the Virginia Standards of Learning and establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects.
- Demonstrate understanding of job tasks.
- Possess knowledge of teaching and instruction of the assigned grade level or subjects, using effective techniques.
- Demonstrate considerable knowledge of the principles and methodologies of effective teaching.
- Demonstrate in-depth knowledge of the subject(s) being taught.
- Demonstrate the ability to deliver articulate oral presentations and well-written communication, and interact effectively with parents, pupils, teachers, administrators, classified employees, and the community.
- Operate computers to design graphics and other written materials.
- Demonstrate working knowledge of the English language in written and verbal content.
- Demonstrate responsibility for professional growth by seeking continuing education and in-service training.
