The ideal School Counselor will be responsible for supporting the academic, social, and emotional development of our students. This full-time position requires a proactive approach to counseling, collaboration with staff and parents, and a commitment to fostering a positive school environment. Candidates who hold a license as a professional counselor, clinical social worker, psychologist, or another licensed counseling professional are eligible to obtain a provisional license in school counseling through the Virginia Department of Education.
Responsibilities- Provide individual and group counseling to students to address personal, social, and academic issues.
- Develop and implement comprehensive counseling programs that promote student success and well-being.
- Collaborate with teachers, administrators, and parents to identify students in need of support and develop intervention plans.
- Conduct assessments to evaluate students' needs and progress, and maintain accurate records of counseling sessions.
- Facilitate conflict resolution and peer mediation among students.
- Organize and lead workshops and seminars on topics such as study skills, stress management, and social skills.
- Advocate for students' needs and rights within the school and community.
- Stay informed about community resources and make referrals as necessary.
- Participate in school meetings, committees, and professional development opportunities.
- Uphold confidentiality and ethical standards in all counseling practices.
- Master’s degree in School Counseling or a related field.
- Valid state certification or licensure as a school counselor.
- Experience working with children and adolescents in an educational setting preferred.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build rapport with students, parents, and staff.
- Knowledge of child development, counseling techniques, and educational practices.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion within the school community.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion.
