Job DescriptionEastern Shore Community College is a member of the Virginia Community College System. The College serves the residents of Accomack County and Northampton County as a two-year institution of higher learning. Operating under policies established by the State Board for Community Colleges and the Eastern Shore Community College Board, the college is financed primarily with state funds, supplemented by contributions from the two counties and the Eastern Shore Community College Foundation.
ESCC's Adult Education Program offers adult learners who have not completed high school the opportunity to gain a high school equivalency credential through individualized instruction and classes in adult basic education, literacy, and GED preparation. The Evening GED Instructor provides instruction to adult learners in an evening classroom setting, helping students strengthen academic skills and prepare to pass the GED high school equivalency test.
The instructor supports student persistence and progress toward post-secondary education, training, and employment. The Adult Education program operates as part of ESCC's Workforce Development Services department.
The Evening GED Instructor will:
- Provide instruction in adult basic education and GED preparation
- Teach and reinforce skills in reading/language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies as appropriate to student needs
- Plan and deliver engaging lessons using approved curriculum and instructional technology
- Differentiate instruction for adult learners at varying skill levels
- Administer or support required assessments
- Maintain accurate attendance and student progress documentation
- Communicate with students regarding attendance, progress, and persistence
- Participate in staff development and program meetings to learn and apply best practices in adult education
- Collaborate with Adult Education staff to support student transition to post-secondary education, training, and employment

Minimum Qualifications- Previous teaching/training experience
- Ability to motivate and build positive relationships with adult learners
- Knowledge of basic academic skills and the ability to support GED preparation
- Detail oriented and well organized
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Ability to maintain accurate records and follow program requirementsi>
- Proficiency with personal computers and instructional technology
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Experience working in adult education, workforce development, or related instructional settings is preferred.
