Environmental Compliance Inspector
Description: The Environmental Compliance Inspector is responsible for inspecting industrial and commercial facilities for compliance with pretreatment programs, evaluating wastewater treatment systems, responding to sewer system spills, and monitoring facilities for compliance with environmental permits. Work is performed under general supervision with flexibility in developing work methods and sequences.
Key Responsibilities- Manage and administer programs related to Industrial Pretreatment, Stormwater, Illicit Discharge, and Fats, Oils, and Grease (FOG) compliance.
- Perform office duties such as handling phone inquiries, composing emails, procuring supplies, and preparing reports.
- Issue notices of violation as needed.
- Conduct field inspections and reconnaissance of outfalls, facilities, and other sites.
- Sample wastewater and ensure compliance at waste hauler receiving stations.
- Generate pretreatment permits and monitor industrial user compliance.
- Calibrate and maintain meters and sampling equipment.
- Support public outreach efforts, Hazmat collection events, and storm drain marking.
- High School Diploma, GED, or specialized diploma.
- At least one year of relevant experience.
- Higher levels may require additional education and experience.
- Equivalent combinations of training and experience may be considered.
- Some positions require a valid driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record.
- Ability to obtain a valid state driver’s license within 30 days of hire if required.
- Environmental regulations including VPDES and MS4 permit compliance.
- Federal, state, and local pretreatment, wastewater, and stormwater rules.
- Sampling methods, safety procedures, and chain of custody protocols.
- Data management, billing procedures, spreadsheets, and software (Microsoft Office, ArcGIS, Linko).
- Inspecting industrial/commercial facilities.
- Using GIS/GPS software and field equipment (flow meters, pH/temp modules, actuators).
- Issuing permits and preparing reports.
- Training, presenting, and customer service.
- Oral/written communication and math proficiency.
- Represent the department professionally.
- Work independently or in teams.
- Think critically and manage time effectively.
- Handle challenging customer situations tactfully.
