The county of Accomack is seeking a detail-oriented and motivated Environmental Planner to join our Community and Economic Development Department. The successful candidate will play a key role in reviewing plans, issuing permits, and inspecting sites to ensure compliance with County ordinances and environmental regulations.
This position involves regular interaction with contractors, developers, and homeowners to provide guidance on permitting compliance, as well as performing routine field inspections to verify adherence to environmental standards and corrective actions. The ideal candidate will possess strong analytical judgment, sound decision-making skills, and the ability to interpret and apply relevant regulations, policies, and procedures.
Key Responsibilities- Review plans, permit applications, and related documentation for compliance with County regulations.
- Issue permits and conduct field inspections to ensure compliance with approved plans and ordinances.
- Respond to inquiries from the public, contractors, developers, and homeowners regarding permitting requirements and compliance matters.
- Prepare technical reports, correspondence, and forms related to environmental compliance and inspections.
- Document findings and follow up on corrective actions to ensure timely resolution of compliance issues.
- Maintain accurate records and participate in departmental meetings and ongoing training.
- Associate’s degree with course work in drafting, surveying, engineering, planning, project management, or a related field.
- One (1) to three (3) years of relevant experience and/or training in reading and interpreting engineering drawings, writing technical letters and reports, or planning/project management.
- Equivalent combinations of education, training, and experience will be considered.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Science, or a related field.
- Five (5) years of relevant professional experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Possession of the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) Erosion and Sediment Control Inspector Certification and Stormwater Management Combined Administrator Certification preferred.
- Ability to obtain required certifications within 18 months of employment (if not already certified).
- Ongoing participation in DEQ-mandated training and certification maintenance.
- Proficiency with basic computer hardware and software.
- Possession of a valid driver’s license.
- Satisfactory completion of a background check, DMV records check, and drug screening prior to employment.
- Annual DMV records check required thereafter.
