Description

The Division of Nephrology, Department of Medicine at the University of Virginia (UVA) is seeking a full‑time board‑certified or board‑eligible Transplant Nephrologist to join our renal team in Charlottesville, Virginia. This is an open‑rank, tenure‑ineligible position. Rank and salary will be dependent upon qualifications. The successful candidate should possess outstanding clinical, technical, and interpersonal skills, and training from a top‑rated institution.

The transplant nephrologist candidate will provide direct patient care and lead multi‑disciplinary teams in the in‑patient and out‑patient setting to manage recipients of kidney and pancreas transplants, conduct pre‑transplant evaluations, perform living donor candidate evaluations, and determine suitability of organs from medically complex deceased donors. The candidate will participate in clinical and operational meetings such as the selection committee, candidate review board, HLA review, post‑transplant review, and living donor meetings.

The candidate is expected to actively engage in quality improvement projects and clinical problem‑based task forces, including serving as lead transplant nephrologist on certain projects.

Participation in teaching programs for transplant nephrology and surgery fellows, general nephrology fellows, medical house staff, medical students, and transplant advanced practice providers and coordinators is required. Research experience is preferable but not mandatory. The UVA kidney‑pancreas transplant program is a large‑volume transplant center with sustained growth over the last five years. In 2023, UVA performed 203 adult kidney and/or pancreas transplants with excellent patient and graft survival.

We strive to create a collaborative working environment that fosters professional growth and provides the platform for faculty to become leaders in the field of transplantation. Faculty are encouraged to critically appraise current established practices, explore new therapeutic and diagnostic paradigms, and embrace emerging technologies to increase access to transplantation and promote longevity of patients and allografts.
