Responsibilities
  • Administer ionizing radiation to humans of all ages (newborn to geriatric) for diagnostic, therapeutic, or research purposes.
  • Perform radiographic procedures and related techniques, producing images for interpretation by a licensed independent practitioner (LIP).
  • Demonstrate knowledge of human anatomy, physiology, pathology, and medical terminology, and maintain high accuracy in radiographic positioning and exposure technique.
  • Possess, utilize, and maintain knowledge of radiation protection and safety.
  • Serve as the primary liaison between patients, LIPs, and the support team; maintain sensitive communication, assessment, monitoring, and care skills.
  • Participate in quality improvement processes and ongoing performance assessment; engage in continuing education to enhance patient care and technical competence.
  • Perform radiographic procedures, determine radiographic exposure factors, and assist LIP with fluoroscopic and specialized interventional radiographic procedures.
  • Perform non-interpretive fluoroscopic procedures as prescribed by a LIP; ensure patient safety during all procedures and document imaging orders.
  • Prepare patients for procedures and provide patient education related to imaging procedures.
  • Apply ALARA principles to minimize exposure to patients, staff, and others; evaluate images for technical quality and proper identification.
  • Identify and escalate emergency situations and manage until the appropriate LIP, EMS, MERT, RRT, or Code Team arrives.
  • Educate and mentor students and other learners in the Radiology environment; participate in ongoing quality assurance activities.
Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements (for Hire)
  • ARRT-R Registry by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT-R).
Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements (for Continued Employment)
  • Current Certification by ARRT.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS for Healthcare Providers).
Experience
  • Required:

    One year of previous work experience.
  • Preferred:
    Previous work experience in an academic medical center environment; 1-3 years of radiologic technologist work experience.
Education/Training
  • Required:

    Graduation from a JRC Accredited Program in Radiologic Technology recognized by the ARRT.
  • Preferred:
    Bachelor's Degree in Radiologic Technology or closely related field from an accredited program.
Independent Action
  • Radiographers independently perform or assist the licensed independent practitioner in completing radiologic imaging exams, based on physician’s written order, department protocols, and safety standards.
  • Represent the goals, values, and vision of VCU Health System; ensure adherence to regulatory standards, policies, procedures, and guidelines; resolve basic service delivery issues.

Position Requirements
  • Individual shift rotation and schedules established with manager/supervisor; scheduling may be adjusted to meet staffing needs.
  • Weekend and after-hours coverage may be required based on workload and staffing.
  • Radiologic Technologists are considered “Essential Employees” who may be required to report to work per VCUHS policy.

  • Physical:
    Lifting 20-50 lbs.;
    Prolonged standing/sitting; walking; climbing; reaching.
  • Other:
    Prolonged computer interaction; vision; hearing; ability to communicate clearly; emotional ability to work in a fast-paced environment with multiple priorities.
