Deputy Sheriff – Court Security GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES

Serves as a sworn law enforcement deputy of the Sheriff’s Office; work is performed in accordance with applicable regulations and directions of state and federal laws; incumbent ensures a safe and secure courtroom environment in order to conduct judicial hearings and trials.

As a deputy Sheriff assigned to Court Services Division of the Office, incumbent directs and protects the integrity of all court personnel and proceedings. The incumbent is directly responsible in the chain of command to the Court Security Sergeant.

• Ensures the security and integrity of the open courtroom.
• Prevents any disruptions or distractions against the peace, dignity, and decorum of the court(s).
• Reviews all incident reports and other documentation to ensure accuracy and thoroughness.
• Checks court dockets to guarantee attendance by all summoned for court appearance.
• Protects the judge, all court officers, jurors, and attending citizens.
• Notifies the Transportation Division of any transport orders and records them in the log.
• Extensive working knowledge of federal, state and local laws that may pertain to a given assignment.
• Extensive working knowledge of Sheriff’s Office policy, procedures and methods.
• Ability to observe and mentally record events, impressions, identities, and other observations.
• Ability to visually distinguish colors and details.
• Ability to impartially exercise independent judgment in the performance of duties.
• Ability to take notes and to completely and accurately describe factual information regarding an incident.
• Ability to successfully complete all required training.
• Ability to endure verbal and mental abuse when confronted by hostile individuals without responding inappropriately.
• Ability to perform searches of persons, vehicles, buildings, areas, and articles by feeling, observing, hearing, and smelling.
• Ability to perform any other duties as assigned.
• Serves at the pleasure of the Sheriff.

Extensive knowledge of state and county laws and ordinances relating to the criminal code; extensive knowledge of correctional facility policy and procedure; demonstrated ability to command the respect of subordinates and inmates; ability to deal firmly, fairly, and courteously with the public; ability to communicate effectively via voice, telephone, radio, intercom, or in writing with staff, inmates, or the public; ability to keep accurate records and prepare reports;

demonstrated skill in the use of firearms; physical condition that permits the activities necessary in, and inherent to law enforcement and corrections operations.

Must be at least 21 years of age. Must possess a high school diploma or GED – an associate’s degree from an accredited community or junior college preferred; must be a citizen of the United States; have no background or record of any criminal conviction; must be of exemplary ethical reputation; must possess a valid Virginia Operator’s License with no major convictions within the preceding five year period;

must be able to satisfactorily pass a thorough background investigation; must be in a physical condition which does not limit, in any way, activities necessary and/or inherent to law enforcement operations. Must be Jail or Road Certified.

Pay: $15 uncertified $18 certified
