About Us

The Nova Scotia Public Prosecution Service (PPS) was established in 1990 as the first statutorily based independent prosecution service in Canada. The Public Prosecution Service is responsible for all prosecutions and appeals within the jurisdiction of the Attorney General.

With the guiding mission of providing fair and equal treatment in the prosecution of offences, the PPS prosecutes charges laid under the Criminal Code and under Nova Scotia statutes such as the Occupational Health and Safety Act. The Head Office is in Halifax and there are regional offices located throughout the province.

The core functions of the Nova Scotia Public Prosecution Service are to:

  • Represent the Crown in the conduct of criminal and quasi-criminal trials and appeals before all levels of courts.
  • Participate in the development of criminal law and criminal prosecutions policy.
  • Provide advice to police in respect of prosecutions generally or in respect of specific investigations
  • After a charge is laid by police a Crown Attorney will review the evidence and determine if there is a realistic prospect of conviction
  • The Crown Attorney will also consider the public interest to determine if a charge should proceed even if there is a realistic prospect of conviction

The Crown Attorney (Human Trafficking Prosecutions) is responsible to lead the Public Prosecution Service’s response to human trafficking offences by preparing and conducting human trafficking prosecutions in Provincial and Supreme Court and supporting other Crown Attorneys prosecuting these offences to ensure consistency of approach through training and policy initiatives. The Crown Attorney (Human Trafficking Prosecutions) also participates in collaborative work with other justice partners to enhance the criminal justice system response to human trafficking.

This includes developing best practices and policy for such prosecutions. In this role you will collaborate with and train police and other Crown Attorneys regarding such prosecutions.

Qualifications and Experience

As the successful applicant you will have at least seven years of prosecutorial experience, this would include significant criminal prosecution experience and experience and interest in human trafficking cases.

You will have:

  • significant experience and/or training in dealing with traumatized individuals
  • a demonstrated interest in gender-based violence
  • experience interacting effectively with vulnerable witnesses, complex police techniques and challenging factual scenarios
  • significant knowledge of criminal law, evidence and procedure.
  • effective public speaking and teaching skills (including delivering training programs and developing resource material)
  • a high degree of collaboration skills and the ability to develop relationships with key stakeholders
  • must be a practicing member of the Nova Scotia Barristers' Society (or eligible to become so)

Successful applicants may be required to provide a current Certificate of Standing from their law society, including all jurisdictions of which they are members, whether non-practicing or practicing.

The above qualifications will be assessed using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

Based on the employment status and union agreement, the Government of Nova Scotia offers its employees a wide range of benefits such as a Defined Benefit Pension Plan, Health, Dental, Life Insurance, General illness, Short and Long Term Disability, Vacation and Employee and Family Assistance Programs.
