Responsibilities- Provide evidence-based nursing care utilizing the nursing process, principles, practices and techniques of general nursing care as determined by Standards of Practice under the direction of a Registered Nurse.
- Screen for sick call, administer medications, and provide first aid and basic life support to patients and employees as needed.
- Maintain open lines of communication with security and treatment staff; provide input to assist the facility provider in organizing a treatment plan.
- Record all pertinent information into the medical record and interact with other departments as needed.
- Promote continued competence through education/certification with a focus on correctional nursing.
- Be available to work hours, days and locations as assigned and provide coverage as needed to meet institutional needs; assignments to other duties or locations may be necessary.
- This is a wage position limited to working no more than 1,500 hours per agency during the 12-month period (May 1 – April 30), and no more than 29 hours per week on average; the wage period resets annually.
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
- Must possess and maintain a valid unrestricted Virginia Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license or a multi-state compact license; if a recent VA program graduate and not licensed, the NCLEX-PN exam must be scheduled at application time.
- Working knowledge of principles, practices and techniques of practical or general nursing care.
- Demonstrated ability to screen complaints of physical ailments and refer necessary cases to other medical professionals.
- Ability to maintain appropriate documentation, provide first aid, and carry out providers’ orders in applying treatments.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions and administer practical nursing care.
- Certified Basic Life Support (BLS) for health care providers with current certification through American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) is required upon hire.
- Experience working in a Corrections or Law enforcement environment.
- Experience or related training in delivery of general nursing and emergency medical care.
