The University of Virginia’s Department of Surgery seeks a Ph.D.
-level Research Scientist to lead and expand research for the Trauma Program and the Global Surgery Program. This position offers equal emphasis on domestic trauma and international surgical systems, with projects spanning clinical outcomes, health systems performance, and surgical access. The successful candidate will play a central role in shaping research priorities, securing funding, and mentoring the next generation of academic surgeons.
Leadership
- Design, implement, and analyze research studies, with primary focus on quantitative methods, study design, and biostatistics; qualitative and mixed-methods expertise preferred.
- Lead or contribute to competitive grant applications to federal, foundation, and international funding agencies.
- Publish findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at national and international meetings.
- Collaborate with faculty, residents, fellows, and multidisciplinary teams to develop research questions and study protocols.
- Mentor trainees in research methodology, data analysis, and scholarly output.
- Build and sustain partnerships within UVA and with external collaborators, including low- and middle-income country partners.
- Support the development of sustainable research infrastructure for both programs.
- Maintain accurate and organized research records, adhering to all ethical and safety standards.
- Ensure timely progress toward project timelines and deliverables.
- Participate in domestic and international travel for project collaboration, capacity building, and field research.
- Contribute to the overall success and reputation of the Department of Surgery at the University of Virginia.
Education:
Ph.D. or equivalent in epidemiology, biostatistics, public health, global health, health services research, or related field.
Experience:
Candidates should demonstrate a strong record of independent research, scholarly publications, and presentations; proven experience mentoring trainees; and the ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams. Global health experience is preferred, and expertise in health systems research is valued.
Primarily sedentary and computer-based; occasional domestic and international travel required.
Position Compensation Range: $55,000.00 - $ Annual
