Overview
The Fabrication Welding Technician is responsible for various welding duties, including performing multiple welding processes such as fusion welding on ferrous and non-ferrous metals. They are tasked with layout and fabrication of precision weldments from blueprints, utilizing industry-standard methods. The role involves meeting work demands and completing work orders promptly, ensuring the availability and proper functioning of required items, and maintaining safety standards by addressing immediate safety concerns.
The technician maintains welds on various items using processes like manual arc, TIG, MIG, brazing, cement core drilling, sheet metal, and steam-fitting, for items such as gym bleachers, safety bars, lockers, carts, steamers, tools, electric motorized gates, and recreational equipment.
Responsibilities
- Repairs metal surfaces (e.g., doors, drain covers, fences, gates, grates, furniture, tools, parts, electric motorized gates, sheet metal) to ensure safe and efficient use.
- Installs items (e.g., backboards, serving lines, railings, fences, re-wiring trailer lights) to complete projects safely and within time frames.
- Maintains shop, equipment, tools, and vehicles to ensure safety and availability.
- Coordinates with administration and other trades to complete projects and work orders efficiently.
- Requests equipment and supplies to maintain inventory and ensure availability.
- Assists other trades personnel as needed to support their work activities.
- Responds to emergency situations to resolve immediate safety concerns.
- Transports tools, equipment, and supplies.
- Possesses AWS Certification.
- Proficient in MIG, stick, and TIG welding, fabrication, and interpreting blueprints.
Working Environment
The role is physically demanding, requiring work in a fabrication shop environment with exposure to loud noises and temperature changes. It involves working in a fast-paced, high-volume, and quality-controlled setting, often in areas under construction, accessible only by OSHA-approved ladders or stairs. Flexibility in work hours, including evenings and weekends, may be necessary. Safety gear such as hard hats, safety glasses, OSHA-approved footwear, and flame-retardant clothing must be worn at all times.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in Flux-cored/MIG welding.
- High school diploma or GED required.
Abilities
- Ability to lift, carry, and move objects up to 50 pounds regularly.
- Capability to relocate a 12-foot stepladder unaided.
- Work at heights up to 60 feet, climbing and balancing on scaffolds, lifts, and ladders.
- Perform physical activities such as walking, climbing, lifting, squatting, crawling, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and overhead reaching.
- Good vision (corrected if necessary), color vision, hearing, and English communication skills.
- Use standard ladders safely while carrying tools.
- Recognize problems or potential issues.
- Apply general rules to specific problems and synthesize information to form conclusions.
