Summary/General Description Of Job:

Identify, remove, pack, transport, or dispose of hazardous materials, including asbestos, lead-based paint, waste oil, fuel, transmission fluid, radioactive materials, or contaminated soil.

Essential Duties &

Job Functions:
  • For Waste retention and Transfer (WRT): collect, consolidate, package, label, and transport hazardous and regulated substances; assist in operating the Oily Waste Retention and Transfer Station, perform cargo tank transfers, clean stationary retention tanks and mobile tankers, inventory wastes, and perform housekeeping duties.
  • For Industrial Waste Treatment Plant (IWTP): assist in treating hazardous waste, operate solvent recovery stills and bio‑reactor, mark, label, and track hazardous waste, operate chemical laboratory test equipment and gas detection instruments.
  • Hazardous Substance Spill Response Team Member: support the Spill Response Team, record radio and phone messages, deliver equipment and materials, assist in spill cleanup, be on call for spill control and containment, provide backup for the Fire Department as required, operate compressors, pumps, valves, fittings, five‑ton trucks, cargo tanker trucks, forklifts, and communication systems.
  • Periodically rotate between assignments at WRT, IWTP, Bremerton Naval Hospital, PSNS, Naval Station Bremerton, and other locations.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • May perform work in other classifications for incidental work, with necessary wage adjustments.

  • The proper use of tools and equipment commonly used in hazardous materials and waste handling.
  • Completing all mandated training requirements per government and management directives.
  • Timely and cost‑effective performance of duties.
  • Accurate and timely completion of all departmental work.
  • Professional, courteous interaction with a variety of people in diverse situations.
  • Adherence to company safety policies and good industrial and office safety practices.
  • Compliance with company Standard Operating Procedures, Personnel policies, and procedures.
  • Ability to work well under pressure.
Job Requirements (Education, Experience, Professional Associations):
Mandatory
  • High school education or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 1 year experience as a hazardous material handler trainee or equivalent preferred.
  • Competent in using full face respirators, SCBA, safety equipment; pumps and compressors; cargo tanker trucks, five‑ton trucks, and forklifts.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions under hazardous conditions.
  • Valid Washington State class "B" commercial driver’s license with an (H) Hazardous Endorsement within 6 months.
  • Meet and maintain company physical and security requirements, respirator qualification, and clearance eligibility when required.
  • Good communication skills for a service team environment.
  • Valid state‑issued driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Successful background checks and/or drug testing per contract.
  • U.S. Citizenship.
Specific

Qualifications:
  • Complete 40 hours Hazardous Waste Facility Operations, SCBA Training, Respirator Training, CPR/First Aid Training before assignment.
  • Complete Fire Extinguisher Training, Forklift Operation, SWFPAC General Explosive Safety Training, DOT Hazardous Material Training, Confined Space training within 6 months.
  • Meet all applicable training requirements specified in SUBASEBANGORINST 5100.7A, Industrial and Hazardous Waste Disposal Manual, or other Navy instructions referenced in the contract, or in written company policy.
  • Wages: $31.21/hr (Union position).
