Incumbent uses various tools, testing instruments and equipment to install, inspect, repair, overhaul, maintain, adjust and troubleshoot diesel/power generation equipment.
Essential Duties &Job Functions:
- Performs operations, maintenance and repairs on stationary and mobile power generation equipment from 500 Watt through 2,500 Kilowatts, including auxiliary components and station service equipment.
- Inspects, operates, maintains and repairs fuel, coolant, compressed air, hydraulic and lubricating oil systems.
- Knowledgeable in the operation of associated electrical controls for the above equipment including motor control centers, disconnect switches, automatic transfer switches and battery chargers.
- Performs inspection and evaluation of equipment using personal observation, calipers, torque wrenches, dial indicators, deflection gauges, exhaust analyzers, electrical multi-meters, vernier scales, hydrometers, compression gauges and micrometers.
- Makes repairs and performs overhauls as required using heavy wrenches, pullers, jacks, hoists, load banks and bridge cranes on equipment including diesel and gasoline engines, air compressors, pneumatic starters, batteries, hydraulic systems and fuel systems.
- Performs lockout/tagout of engines and auxiliary systems as required to safely isolate the equipment for service.
- Operates emergency generators during routine tests and actual emergencies. Observes, records, and evaluates temperature, pressure, level, and RPM readings.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- May perform work in other classifications when incidental work is necessary to the accomplishment of the work assignment. Significant work in another job classification may be required if accompanied by any wage adjustments applicable.
- The proper use of tools and equipment commonly used in the Diesel/Power Generation Equipment Mechanic field.
- Completing all mandated training requirements per government and management directives.
- Timely and cost effective performance of duties.
- Timely completion and accuracy of all departmental work.
- Dealing with a variety of people in a professional, courteous manner in diversified situations.
- Adherence to established company safety policies and good industrial and office safety practices.
- Compliance with company Standard Operating Procedures and Personnel policies and procedures.
- Having the ability to work well under pressure.
- Four (4) years’ experience as a heavy diesel power generation equipment mechanic, including mechanical and machine equipment repair.
- Four (4) year technical training program completion or a recognized, established apprenticeship program. Training may be substituted with progressive “hands on” experience specifically in the diesel power generation area, on a year for year basis, with at least two (2) years at an apprentice level.
- Detailed working experience and knowledge of diesel engines associated with generator systems of 500 horsepower or larger.
- Must have and maintain hand tools of the trade to perform the normal work of the classifications.
- Must have knowledge of, and know how to use, specialized tools needed to perform repair functions.
- Ability to troubleshoot equipment.
- Ability to meet and maintain company physical and security requirements and clearance eligibility when required.
- Must possess good communication skills for a service team environment.
- Valid state driver’s license with acceptable driving record.
- Ability to successfully pass any background checks and/or drug testing required on the contract.
- U.S. Citizenship.
