About the role

Puzzles & Logic Counselors design and lead activities such as logic grids, riddles, ciphers, tangrams, math games, scavenger-hunt clues, and escape-room-style challenges. You’ll handle planning, prep, instruction, and breakdown for daily blocks, building campers’ teamwork, persistence, and problem-solving in a fun, inclusive setting.

Responsibilities
  • Plan and facilitate age‑appropriate puzzle sessions aligned to camp themes and ability levels.
  • Prepare materials and spaces for each activity.
  • Lead problem‑solving activities (pattern recognition, elimination, working systematically, spatial reasoning, algorithmic thinking) and model collaborative norms.
  • Keep sessions inclusive and safe: manage small parts, maintain clear traffic flow, set table/floor rules, and follow sanitation/allergy guidance.
  • Track inventory and request supplies within budget/approval; maintain a log for locks/combos and puzzle resets.
  • Coordinate with Counselors/Junior Counselors for roles, behavior expectations, and smooth transitions between groups.
  • Monitor environment (heat index for outdoor clues, trip hazards, furniture layout); promptly report hazards/maintenance issues and complete incident reports as directed.
  • Meet or exceed ACA practices and Virginia child day program licensing standards.
  • Maintain professionalism and confidentiality; be punctual, prepared, and flexible; perform other duties as assigned by the Camp Director or designee.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience leading youth enrichment (math circles, chess/strategy clubs, makerspace/escape‑room activities, classroom or camp settings).
  • Strong lesson‑planning and facilitation skills; able to differentiate for varied ages and abilities and to design original puzzles or adapt existing ones.
  • Clear, upbeat communicator with strong group management; calm under pressure and responsive to feedback.
  • Pediatric First Aid/CPR (or able to obtain before the season and maintain throughout employment).
Eligibility

Must be at least 18 years old by the first day of employment and able to pass required background checks per Virginia regulations.
