About the role
The Archery Specialist designs and leads a safe, engaging archery program for multiple age groups. You’ll own the planning, setup, instruction, and breakdown of daily archery blocks; manage equipment and range safety; and collaborate with group counselors as needed.
Responsibilities- Plan summer archery activities tailored to the age and ability of campers and prepare backup plans for weather/space changes.
- Set up, operate, and break down the range daily (waiting line, shooting line, target line, backstops/netting, safety zones) following recognized safety standards and camp procedures.
- Maintain constant supervision and enforce range rules and whistle commands; proactively manage risk and behavior.
- Teach fundamentals (stance, grip, draw, anchor, aim, release, follow-through) and adjust for individual needs, including adaptive approaches.
- Inspect and maintain equipment (bows, strings, arrows, fletching, nocks, targets, stands, netting); track inventory and request supplies within budget.
- Conduct safety briefings, demonstrations, and skill checks; document incidents/accidents and communicate promptly with camp leadership.
- Coordinate with Counselors/Junior Counselors for smooth transitions and role clarity during sessions.
- Keep the range and storage areas orderly, labeled, and secure; uphold sanitation and heat/hydration protocols.
- Meet or exceed ACA practices and Virginia child day program licensing standards.
- Maintain professionalism and confidentiality; be punctual, prepared, and flexible; perform other duties as assigned by the Camp Director or designee.
- USA Archery Instructor Level 1 or higher (or able to obtain before the season and maintain throughout employment).
- Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED (or able to obtain and keep current).
- Experience teaching youth archery in camp, school, or community programs; strong classroom/group management.
- Comfortable working outdoors for extended periods; able to lift/move targets and equipment.
Must be at least 18 years old by the first day of employment and able to pass required background checks per Virginia regulations.
