Hiring substitute bus drivers for the  school year. Safely transport students from home or bus stops to school and back; transport students on field trips and other activities. Full-time and substitute positions available. Substitute drivers fill in for full-time drivers on an as-needed basis and may move to full-time positions if performance standards are met.

• Conduct proper pre-trip inspection of the school bus before route/trip.
• Operate the school bus in a safe manner.
• Enforce safety rules.
• Apply reasonable disciplinary functions with fairness and consistency.
• Maintain good rapport with schools serviced and the Pupil Transportation Department.
• Demonstrate good personal hygiene and conduct.
• Attend work daily and be engaged in job responsibilities.
• Be able to lift 25 lbs. or more.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

• Obtain and maintain a Commercial Driver’s License with proper endorsements.
• Successfully complete the State of Virginia Department of Education Certification Course to drive a School Bus.
• Knowledge of operation and function of a school bus and governing laws.
• Ability to read and properly complete forms required by the Pupil Transportation office.
• Ability to deal effectively with children and adults.
• Have a good driving record, good health, and be drug-free.
• Be at least 21 years old.

Substitute Bus Driver salary: $25.49 per hour, 29 hours per week maximum, no benefits. Open until filled.

If you need to acquire an instructional permit to drive a school bus, study the following sections in the Commercial Driver's Manual from the Division of Motor Vehicles:

• Section 1 – General Knowledge
• Section 2 – Air Brakes
• Section 5 – School Bus
• Section 6 – Transporting Cargo
• Section 8 – Transporting Passengers
• Sections 3, 4, 7 and 9 should be reviewed for the General Knowledge test.

When ready, go to the Division of Motor Vehicles to take the following written tests to obtain the Commercial Driver’s License Instructional Permit:

• Transporting Passengers
• School Bus
