Traffic Supervisors/School Crossing Guards - Substitute
CITY OF WESTFIELD MA is accepting applications for the Traffic Supervisors/School Crossing Guards - Substitute position.
OverviewTraffic Supervisors (School Crossing Guards) are responsible for controlling and directing motor vehicle and pedestrian traffic at assigned crossings to protect the safety of school children and ensure orderly traffic flow.
SupervisionWorks under the general supervision of the Police Chief or designee.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Report to the assigned crossing station in a timely manner and remain at the station until the conclusion of the school site in the morning and/or at dismissal time.
- Ensure children use proper crossing locations and that no children are in the streets when traffic is moving.
- Remain alert for present or potential traffic hazards near the crossings and submit a written hazard report with recommendations to the Safety Officer.
- Maintain awareness of surroundings and the ability to move themselves and children out of harm’s way.
High School diploma or GED preferred.
Physical, Motor, and Visual Skills- Stand and walk from curb to street; use arms/hands to direct traffic.
- Stop cars using arm signals or signs; communicate effectively in English to instruct children when it is safe to cross.
- Maintain ability to detect traffic hazards and respond to weather announcements or school cancellations.
- Must be able to stand and walk from curb to middle of street; stop cars; use verbal communications to instruct children when safe to cross.
- Must be able to detect traffic hazards and respond to weather-related announcements.
- Position may involve moderate mobility; lifting/turning a sign (approximately two pounds) as needed. Pushing or pulling is not required.
