Summary

Performs all activities required to safely drive a school bus transporting students and other authorized personnel to and from schools and school‑related events.

Qualifications
  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to completion of the tenth grade.
  • Must have, or be able to obtain, certification in emergency first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and the use of an automated external defibrillator.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record from the Department of Motor Vehicles, with the conditions described in the job description.
  • Must have possession of, or ability to obtain, a Class B commercial driver's license (CDL‑B) with P and S endorsements and air brakes; bus drivers under 21 must include a K restriction.
  • Minimum age requirement of 19 years.
  • Successful completion of the FCPS bus driver training program.
  • Must have a satisfactory pre‑employment physical examination and a completed School Bus Driver’s Physician Certificate (form EB.001).
  • Must complete the Virginia Board of Education training program on autism spectrum disorders.
  • Must provide a pre‑employment school bus driver moral character statement (form EB.003).
  • Ability to adhere to FCPS policy regarding physical or health requirements and certifications.
  • Ability to learn and apply state regulations for school bus operation.
  • Proficiency in the English language for radio communication and general interactions.
  • Knowledge of local road systems; interstate travel may be required for drivers 21 or older.
  • Ability to interact positively with students, maintain discipline, and assist special‑needs riders.
  • Ability to work with school bus attendants to manage riders.
  • Ability to drive any size or type of school bus in the fleet.
  • Knowledge of safe, courteous motor‑vehicle operating procedures.
  • Common sense, punctuality, and regular attendance are essential.
Preferred
  • High School diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED).
Major Duties/Essential Functions
  • Safely transport students on assigned or unassigned routes according to the schedule.
  • Provide transportation for field trips, sanctioned outings, athletic contests, and extracurricular events.
  • Perform pre‑trip inspection in accordance with FCPS and CDL requirements.
  • Regulate heating and ventilation equipment for passenger comfort.
  • Taken appropriate safety precautions during student boarding and departing.
  • Maintain a safe environment by enforcing rules, responding to emergencies, and reporting misbehavior.
  • Operate the vehicle in compliance with traffic and safety laws, exhibit defensive driving skills, and observe speed limits.
  • Supervise loading and unloading of students.
  • Plan and execute emergency evacuations, assisting students as needed.
  • Install snow chains if required.
  • Report crashes immediately to the school system.
  • Attend periodic safety meetings.
  • Keep records of bus mileage and passenger counts.
  • Keep the bus clean and orderly.
  • Identify maintenance needs and arrange for repairs.
  • Perform related duties as required or assigned.
Work Environment/Physical Requirements

Employees frequently work outdoors in street environments near moving traffic and in confined spaces. Conditions include exposure to extreme heat and cold, mechanical parts, fumes, chemicals, and loud noises. The job requires lifting up to 25 lbs routinely and up to 50 lbs occasionally. Adequate strength, agility, vision, and communication skills are essential.
