Title: Open Areas Management Team
Positions: 1 lead and 2 regular members
Location: Based out of Mt. Rogers National Recreation Area, Marion, VA
Dates of Service: April 13th, 2026 – October 2nd, 2026 (25‑week term)
Pay: Lead: $800/week ($600 living stipend + $200 additional benefit)
Regular: $760/week ($600 living stipend + $160 additional benefit)
Status: Full‑time, temporary 900‑hour minimum Ameri Corps National Service position

Our Individual Placement program connects young people to conservation service work across Appalachia and neighboring communities in Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, DC, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. ACC is a program of Conservation Legacy, a nationwide network of conservation organizations. As an Ameri Corps program, participants commit to a term of service at their placement site to gain hands‑on experience and a variety of benefits that help them succeed in achieving their career goals.
ACC welcomes national applicants but emphasizes engagement of local individuals who represent the communities in which they serve.
- Work on small teams in a remote forest environment
- Utilize and maintain gas‑powered equipment, heavy machinery, and hand tools
- Construct, maintain, and demolish fencing
- Control non‑native invasive species mechanically and chemically
- Learn local flora and fauna and use identification keys for surveys
- Maintain safety standards and radio communication
- Assist with data collection and monthly accomplishment reports
- Coordinate vehicle maintenance drop‑off
- Manage credit card purchases and submit receipts monthly
- Serve as a team leader to assist with project communication and coordination

- Age 18‑30 and U.S. citizenship
- High school diploma or GED
- Valid driver’s license
- CPR/First Aid certification by first day (reimbursement possible)
- Physical ability to perform strenuous field activities (off‑trail hiking, monitoring, survey, etc.) for 10 hours in adverse conditions while carrying up to 40 lbs.
- Successful background checks (National Sex Offender Public Registry and federal criminal background check)
- Eligible to receive Ameri Corps Education Award
- Bachelor’s degree in natural resources or related field, or relevant experience
- Experience working in a crew or team setting
- Knowledge of natural resource management
- Pay:
Lead $800/week ($600 living stipend + $200 additional benefit) - Pay:
Regular $760/week ($600 living stipend + $160 additional benefit) - $3,697.50 Ameri Corps Segal Education Award upon successful completion of 900‑hour service term (can be used for paying off federal student loans or paying tuition at a Title IV accredited college)
- $500 professional development fund (used for trainings, certifications, or gear)
- Option to enroll in health, vision, and dental insurance
- Eligibility for the Public Land Corps Hiring Authority upon successful completion – noncompetitive federal hiring status for two years when applying for federal positions
Housing is NOT provided for this position. Candidates must be residents or willing to relocate to the surrounding area.
