Clinical Nurse Job Overview

The Clinical Nurse I job integrates technical skills and theoretical knowledge to meet the needs of the patient and family. This job assists the health care team with the prevention of illness and injury, maintenance of wellness, and provision of comfort.

Further responsibilities include providing direction, education, and beginning to acquire leadership skills at the unit level; delivering and accurately documenting age‑specific care based on medical orders and a multidisciplinary plan of care; and safely administering prescribed medications, identifying incompatibilities and/or interactions.

The Clinical Nurse II job demonstrates mastery of clinical skills and begins to apply this knowledge to a specific patient population. Responsibilities are similar to those of a Clinical Nurse I, with added recognition of changes in patient situations, appropriate intervening, resource mobilization, and assuming higher leadership responsibilities at the unit level.

The Clinical Nurse III job demonstrates clinical knowledge at the unit level and begins to apply this knowledge to a specific patient population. Responsibilities include anticipating changes in patient situations, providing direction and education, serving as a role model, and maintaining accurate documentation and medication administration as described above.

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire

• Clinical Nurses I, II, III:
  Current RN licensure in Virginia or an eligible/compact state

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Continued Employment

• Clinical Nurses I, II, III:
  Current RN licensure in Virginia, AHA BLS HCP Certification or equivalent

Experience Required

• Clinical Nurse I: N/A
• Clinical Nurse II: 12 to 24 months RN experience
• Clinical Nurse III: 3 years of clinical experience

Experience Preferred

• Clinical Nurse I:
  Experience as an LPN, nursing assistant, or care partner in either an acute care setting or as applicable to area of practice
• Clinical Nurse II, III:
  Academic health‑care experience; experience with similar patient population in either an acute care setting or as applicable to area of practice

Education or Training Required

• Clinical Nurses I, II, III:
  Diploma or Associate's Degree from a professional nursing program recognized and/or approved by the corresponding state's Board of Nursing.
• All registered nurses without a Bachelor's degree in Nursing (or higher) must enroll in an approved RN to BSN program within two years of their start date and complete the program within five years, unless grandfathered under previous requirements.

Education or Training Preferred

• Clinical Nurses I, II, III:
  Completion of a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (or higher) from an accredited program.
• Clinical Nurse III:
  Certification in a specialty area.

Independent Actions Required

• Follows documented physician/licensed independent provider orders.
• Practices within the boundaries of regulations governing the practice of nursing in Virginia.
• Practice guided by ANA Code of Ethics for Nursing and established national nursing practice standards.
• All practice guided by and follows VCUHS policies and procedures and established practice.
