SummaryThese positions are located in Shenandoah National Park within the Natural and Cultural Resources Division. The positions perform common biological science field tasks related to natural resource management. Duties include plant monitoring, invasive plant management, compliance documentation, and related technical support.
Responsibilities- Plants duties: Assist the Biologist overseeing invasive plant management and restoration program. Perform invasive plant management (herbicide use), forest pest management (pesticide use), monitoring of treatment sites, invasive plant inventory, nursery maintenance, vegetation restoration, data entry, and equipment maintenance. GS‑6 staff provide field oversight to lower graded employees, interns, and volunteers. GS‑7 staff provide increased responsibility for determining crew daily work assignments.
- Vegetation duties: Assist the park Botanist with plant identification, detailed plant monitoring, data entry, equipment management, and specimen processing. Projects include long‑term forest monitoring, rare plant monitoring, meadow monitoring, and plant protection activities. GS‑7 personnel serve as a plant identification and vegetation sampling field methods expert, provide daily work planning and supervision.
- Compliance duties: Perform site visits to document project work compliance with natural and cultural resource impact mitigations, collect photos, notes, spatial data and resolve resource protection/compliance issues related to NEPA, NHPA, and ESA.
- U.S. Citizenship required.
- Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
- Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.
- Valid driver’s license (and required driving record). May need to operate a government or private motor vehicle and a four‑wheel drive vehicle.
- Uniform required; uniform allowance provided.
- Use permanone on exterior of clothing.
- Minimum age 16 or 18 with appropriate schooling or enrollment.
- Direct deposit participation required.
All qualifications must be met by the closing date of the announcement (04/10/2026). Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience.
GS‑05- Experience: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable to GS‑04, including data collection, equipment maintenance, and reporting.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in a relevant science or technical field with at least 24 semester hours, 6 directly related to the position.
- Combination: Combination of education and experience as described.
- Experience: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable to GS‑05, including invasive plant control, revegetation projects, nursery maintenance, and vegetation data collection.
- Education: At least one full year of graduate education (18 semester hours) directly related to the work.
- Combination: Combination of education and experience as described.
- Experience: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable to GS‑06, including field inventories, crew leadership, compliance site visits, and database management.
- Education: At least one full year of graduate education (18 semester hours) directly related to the work.
- Combination: Combination of education and experience as described.
Volunteer work through National Service programs and other organizations is credited for all qualifying experience.
Additional InformationGS‑05 salary: $19.33 per hour; GS‑06 salary: $21.54 per hour; GS‑07 salary: $23.94 per hour.
