Performs specialized skilled work in the operation of heavy equipment for the Grounds Maintenance and Construction Division. Operates motor grader to grade ball fields, roads, and construction sites; tractors and trailers to haul equipment and material; farm tractors and backhoes for digging trenches, spreading dirt and gravel, hauling dirt and debris, and cutting grass and weeds. Serves as a lead worker to other Operators or Construction Maintenance Workers, providing guidance and supervision as needed.

Responsibilities also include construction/maintenance work such as assisting with construction of new buildings or remodeling structures, maintaining athletic fields, plumbing and irrigation work, and performing minor preventive maintenance.

Minimum Qualifications

• High school graduate or equivalent with 2-3 years of experience operating heavy motorized equipment, or equivalent training and experience.
• Experience using grading instruments.
• Possession of a Class A Commercial driver's license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia with a good driving record.
• Certification as a State Category 60 Registered Technician for pesticide application, or willingness to obtain within 6 months of employment.
• Safety shoes required.
• Acceptable criminal background check.

Supplemental Information

Work is performed outdoors under all weather conditions with exposure to hazards associated with outside maintenance and construction work. This position is considered an Essential Position (County designation ALPHA), requiring the employee to report to work during inclement and extreme weather conditions, often outside normally scheduled work hours or as notified by a supervisor.

• Physical demands: ability to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including tractors, front end loaders, excavators, compactors, bulldozers, etc., and hand tools; lift between 50 and 75 pounds; stand, bend, and stoop for portions of the day.
