As part of York County’s Career Ladder Program (Inspector I‑IV), this position conducts mechanical and plumbing inspections on residential and commercial buildings. Inspectors will review plans, enforce codes, and ensure construction complies with the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code.
Responsibilities- Conduct rough‑in and final inspections of mechanical and plumbing materials, equipment, and systems.
- Review and evaluate construction plans and specifications for new work, alterations, and repairs.
- Interpret, apply, and enforce building codes and ordinances related to plumbing and mechanical systems.
- Observe and report deficiencies, recommending corrective action.
- Perform other inspections as directed by the department.
- Maintain accurate inspection records and documentation.
- Remain on‑site during emergencies or inclement weather per department SOPs.
- High school diploma or GED and 1–3 years of direct building construction inspection experience (or equivalent education and experience).
- For Inspector II: 5+ years of inspection experience, a valid Residential & Commercial Plumbing and Mechanical Inspector certification, and knowledge of relevant building codes.
- Must complete the Code Academy and required certification tests within 18 months of hire.
- Valid driver’s license from the Commonwealth of Virginia with a good driving record.
- Familiarity with electrical and structural codes is desirable.
The role requires frequent walking, standing, climbing stairs and ladders, stooping, and occasional crawling in attics or crawl spaces. Inspectors must be able to operate machinery, equipment, and a motor vehicle.
