The City of Richmond Department of Public Works is seeking multiple highly qualified candidates to fill the position of Gardener with the Urban Forestry Division
. The incumbent is responsible for implementing the City's gardening master plan for beautification and landscaping throughout the municipality.
- Planting, pruning, and maintaining City trees, shrubs, flowers, etc.
- Managing flower beds and other landscape on City-owned/managed property
- Ordering planting materials and providing proper care of these materials
- Using planting materials efficiently to maintain flower beds, shrub care, potting perennials and annuals
- Installing and repairing irrigation systems
- Installing safe work zone areas
- Performing other related duties as assigned
- City of Richmond Department of Public Works employees who perform duties in this class are considered essential employees and may be required to work during times of emergencies, natural disasters, and inclement weather.
Minimum Training and Experience
- High school diploma or GED;
- Two (2) years of experience
- An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification
Preferred Training and Experience
- Knowledge of various hand tools and machinery used for gardening
- Familiarity of work zone safety procedures
Licensing, Certifications, And Other Special Requirements
- A valid Commonwealth of Virginia driver's license (or the ability to obtain one within 30 days) with a satisfactory driving record
- Commonwealth of Virginia Commercial Applicator license or Registered Technician license

Environmental HazardsWorking conditions may include exposure to travel to other locations within the City of Richmond as well as outside of the City of Richmond; exposure to hazardous physical conditions such as mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, etc.; atmospheric conditions such as fumes, odors, dusts, gases, and poor ventilation; inadequate lighting; intense noise; and environmental hazards such as disruptive people, imminent danger, and a threatening environment.
Physical Requirements and Working EnvironmentDue to the nature of work assignments, incumbents must be able to perform detailed work on multiple, concurrent tasks, with frequent interruptions and under time constraint. The essential duties of this classification may require the ability to regularly talk, hear, see, and perform repetitive motions; frequently climb, balance, kneel, crouch, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift; and occasionally stoop, crawl, finger, grasp, and feel.
The working conditions may include environmental hazards. In terms of the physical strength to perform the essential duties, this classification is considered to be medium work.
