Location: Yorktown

Summary

This position is responsible for performing simple and routine maintenance and repair tasks across a variety of trades including carpentry, masonry, plumbing, painting, and electrical work. The work supports the upkeep of park grounds, buildings, and related utilities.

Salary Range

First‑time federal hires are typically appointed at step 1. The listed salary range does not guarantee a higher starting rate.

Duties
  • Performs a variety of maintenance, repair and operational duties on roads, trails, and maintained landscapes.
  • Operates heavy riding and push‑behind lawn mowers, string trimmers, leaf blowers, hand trimmers and other grounds‑care equipment.
  • May operate a refuse collection truck, collecting trash from containers and roadsides.
  • Perform minor repairs to fences and signs.
  • May perform custodial duties.
Requirements
  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
  • Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.
  • Direct Deposit:
    Must participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
  • Driver's License:
    Must operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of duties; valid driver’s license required. Must submit motor‑vehicle operator’s license and driving record.
  • Uniform:
    Must wear a uniform and comply with NPS uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • Work Schedule:

    May be required to work on‑call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime, and shift work.
  • Minimum Age Requirement:
    Applicants must be at least 18 years old, or 16‑year‑olds who meet specified education or training criteria.
Qualifications
  • Ability to perform the work of the position without more than normal supervision.
  • Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc., including blueprints reading.
  • Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment.
  • Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, repair, etc.
  • Knowledge of materials.
  • Technical practices (theoretical precise, artistic).
  • Use of measuring instruments.

Volunteer Experience

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work through National Service programs and other organizations. Volunteer work helps build competencies and can provide credit for qualifying experience.

ICTAP/CTAP Eligibility

Current surplus and current or former displaced federal individuals with special priority selection rights under CTAP or ICTAP must be well qualified to receive consideration.

Education

There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.

Additional Information

This is an open continuous announcement with multiple cut‑off dates. The initial cut‑off date is Monday, January 12 2026.

Physical Demands

Works from ladders, scaffolds, and platforms; stands, stoops, bends, kneels, climbs, and works in tiring positions. Frequently lifts, carries, and sets up parts and equipment weighing up to 40 pounds.

Working Conditions

Work performed inside and outside where dirt, spray, and fumes are present. Required to work in inclement weather and wear protective equipment and clothing that may be heavy and uncomfortable.
