Under supervision, the Utility Mechanic performs specialized semi‑skilled work assisting in the maintenance and repair of the County’s sewer pump stations, water towers, machinery, equipment, and grounds. Work involves assisting lead worker in the areas of preventive and corrective maintenance, inspection and repair of chemical feed systems, repair of altitude valves, basic ground maintenance at all facilities, and responds to emergency calls pertaining to area of responsibility.

Employee must exercise initiative and some independent judgment in completing assigned tasks.

This position reports to the Utility Mechanic Foreman.

  • Operates, inspects and repairs sewer pump station equipment including facility alarm systems, electrical systems, shafting equipment and water towers.
  • Ensures work is performed in accordance with industry and governmental safety standards.
  • Performs preventive maintenance and repairs of pumps, motors, valves, electrical and mechanical equipment; assists in performing corrective maintenance of all control panels when malfunctions occur; performs troubleshooting maintenance of all circuits, transfer switches, circuit breakers and generator components.
  • Performs general maintenance of utility building and grounds, including mowing lawn and landscaping duties.
  • Responds to after‑hours calls on nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • High school diploma/GED.
  • Three (3) to Five (5) years of directly related experience in the field of mechanical maintenance and repair.
  • Any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license; possess and maintain a driving record that meets established Gloucester County Driving Standards.
  • Pass a pre‑employment, post‑offer physical examination; employee may be subject to subsequent physical examinations to he/she meets job‑related physical requirements.
