Performs skilled work operating a refuse collection vehicle over an assigned route, transporting leachate and refuse to disposal sites and related work as required. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Landfill Director.

** The ideal candidate can expect to work up to 29 hours per week**

Essential Job Functions

• Operate roll-off trucks to haul leachate to prescribed disposal areas
• Serve as a back-up driver to operate front end and roll-off trucks to collect and transport refuse from collection sites throughout the County to prescribed disposal areas
• Clean truck and equipment, perform preventive maintenance on equipment
• Perform other public works and maintenance duties as assigned
• Assist in landfill ground maintenance tasks such as mowing grass and bushhogging
• Serve as a back-up scale house operator
• Operate heavy equipment as needed and directed by the Landfill Director
• Perform related tasks as assigned and required

Minimum Qualifications

• Education: High school diploma or equivalent
• Experience: One (1) to three (3) years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Certifications/Licenses: Possession of an appropriate Commercial driver's license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia

Special Qualifications

• Must have a tanker endorsement or obtain within 45 days of hire

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Thorough knowledge of the operation and servicing of heavy trucks and equipment
• Thorough knowledge of traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation
• Thorough knowledge of safe driving practices and occupational hazards of the work
• Skilled in the operation of heavy automotive equipment
• Ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions
• Ability to detect signs of the mechanical failure of the automotive and packing equipment
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with citizens and County staff

This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires using hands to finger, handle or feel, frequently sitting and occasionally requires, walking, climbing or balancing, reaching with hands and arms and lifting; work requires close vision, distance vision, night vision and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word;

hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; worker is regularly exposed to outdoor weather conditions and frequently working near moving mechanical parts; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. heavy traffic, large earth-moving equipment).
