Extra Help Position(s) Available with THE OFFICE OF THE TULARE COUNTY AG COMMISSIONER

Applications will be reviewed by Tulare County Human Resources & Development. As extra help positions become available, County departments with the job openings select the most qualified and appropriate applicant for the position available. The number of hours and duration of employment varies by each assignment. Extra help employees may work in a variety of County departments in locations throughout the geographic county area.

Extra help employees may not work more than 1,559 hours in any fiscal year from July to June. An extra help employee who mistakenly works in excess of 1,559 hours in a fiscal year does not become a probationary or regular employee. Applications will be active for six months. If you are hired for extra help and you complete a work assignment and then wish to be employed again, you must resubmit an Extra Help application online.

Typical Duties
  • Assist licensed Inspectors in conducting field surveys and inspections in areas applicable to the Agricultural Commissioner/Sealer's Department including fruit, vegetable and egg quality control, nursery compliance, pest and disease control, pesticide safety, weighing and measuring device inspection, quantity control of packaged commodities, weighmaster and petroleum products, and electric meters and liquefied petroleum gas, or other areas as directed.
  • Participate in pest surveys, control programs, and/or eradication projects.
  • Direct crews of non-technical field workers as may be needed for conducting the surveys listed above.
  • Prepare maps, route books, routing sheets, etc. as may be needed for survey and detection work.
  • Disseminate agricultural and weights and measures policies and information.

Minimum Qualifications
Education
  • Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade.
Knowledge Of
  • Common agricultural crops, their varieties, pests and diseases.
  • Cultural practices used in establishing, maintaining and harvesting agricultural crops.
  • Use of chemicals in basic plant and soil science as related to agricultural crop production.
  • Accuracy required in experimental methods.
Skill/Ability To
  • Work and communicate effectively with people of various education and socioeconomic backgrounds by respecting beliefs, interpersonal styles and behaviors of both clients and co-workers.
  • Operate contemporary office equipment inclusive of computer, keyboard, and all applicable electronic equipment.
  • Gather designated data and keep accurate, legible records.
  • Read and understand scientific publications.
  • Communicate with people from various socio-economic and educational backgrounds.
  • Maintain cooperative working relationships with staff, grower/operators and personnel from other agencies.
  • Adjust to fluctuating workloads, changing assignments and pressure of meeting deadlines.
License or Certificate
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid California driver's license.

Additionally, a background investigation may also be conducted, which may include a re‑investigation every 10 years for some positions.
